Comments for COLLEEN:
I saw in a baby names book once that Colleen is Irish and means girl.-- Anonymous User 9/13/2005
It does! My name is Colleen. I've always the liked the meaning. It is the Anglicized version of Cailin. I actually have a cousin who's name is Cailin! My aunt didn't know it was another version of Colleen when she named her that.-- Kalanadian 10/10/2005
Colleen Dewhurst (1924-1991) was a Canadian-born actress best known for playing Marilla Cuthbert in the Anne of Green Gables 1985 TV-productions.-- Anonymous User 1/23/2006
I was originally going to be called Colleen, but I wasn't. Colleen always seemed to me as a devil child name - don't be offended or anything, that's just how I think of it. PS. Vitamin C's name is Colleen-- ringer007 1/29/2006
Actually, I take that back now. I met a person named Colleen who is VERY nice, now I like the name. Just goes to show how much that influences your likes and dislikes!-- ringer007 6/22/2006
Colleen is my middle name, and I like it a lot---but as my middle name. It seems a little old fashined and boring to stand on its own, but something about "Molly Colleen" I really like.-- guacamolly85 4/27/2006
It could be possible that the name COLLEEN is linked to the French word for hill, colline.-- bschoer10 5/14/2006
I love this name. I have a great-aunt named Colleen. I think it's pretty. Also, she/we pronounce it coh-leen, not cah-leen.-- jazzbaby 6/13/2006
Canadian actress Colleen Rennison bears the name.-- Maggie_Simpson 8/12/2006
I love this name, it is very pretty. I have seen this listed as an Irish/English name.-- Anonymous User 8/13/2006
Colleen was popular in the 1960's.-- Anonymous User 9/19/2006
Author Colleen Faulkner also goes by the name Hunter Morgan.-- Anonymous User 11/28/2006
I think it's a cool name. Very unique. I've only known of one other Colleen (aside from my cousin) in my life.-- Anonymous User 3/24/2007
Colleen is my other sister's name, and my mother named her that because her father, who was Irish-American, used to call his daughters his Colleens, which meant "little girls" in Irish.-- Martha Gold 3/27/2007
I think this name is very pretty.-- Georgia_kh 4/12/2007
I think it's important to point out that the idea of using Colleen as a feminine given name doesn't seem to have originated in Ireland itself, but rather with Irish-Americans and/or Irish-Australians. In Ireland, the word "Colleen" is in everyday use as a synonym for "girl", and so in Ireland no one would have named a daughter Colleen any more than Americans would name a daughter "Girl". Many people who were raised in Ireland thought it was very odd when their relatives who were a couple of generations removed from Ireland in the USA and Australia started naming daughters Colleen. Eventually when some American and Australian Colleens like Colleen Dewhurst and Colleen McCullough became famous world-wide, a few girls were named Colleen in Ireland itself, but that doesn't seem to have happened until well after Colleen was established as a given name outside of Ireland. I love this name, because it is kind of Irish, and I love Irish names!-- Rosie is amazing 7/16/2007
Cool name. Colly can possibly be a nickname for Colleen.-- CharlieRob 7/28/2007
Colleen Moore (1900-1988), actress.-- cateyedsnake 8/25/2007
I actually like the idea of it meaning girl in Irish. I think that it is a very charming and gorgeous name, but I could never use it for any of my daughters because of the large impression put upon it by my friend.-- mingolando 11/21/2007
Used to not be a big fan of this name, it screams "named after a mother-in-law". It's growing on me now. But it's really quite sweet when said and I think that it will gain popularity in the future.-- kkrieger 11/27/2007
The listed pronunciation is wrong. The stress is on the second syllable. [noted -ed]-- Branddobbe 2/2/2008
My father was going to name me Colleen, until my mother (who just came over from County Clare to marry my father) told him that it meant girl. Personally, I feel that if you're Irish, it's kind of degrading. I mean, who wants to be named girl?-- Anonymous User 3/7/2008
Although I usually hate names that end in -een/ene because they remind me of dimwitted, vapid country girls, this name sounds quite nice to me, and it is, hands down, the most bearable -een name. The name sounds a bit old-fashioned, but it reminds me of the acoustic ambient artist that goes by simply Colleen. Nice name, as long as people don't come up with any creative spellings for it.-- slight night shiver 5/19/2008
Colleen is a bright, dainty name, but don't consider alternative spellings -- Colleen is lovelier than Colline or Collyne.-- EmilyOlive 6/3/2008
My name's Colleen and for the longest time I hated it. Now I love it because I've never met another Colleen in my life, I always get compliments on it and it's Irish and I'm from an Irish background. I think this would be a realy nice name for a kid. Also no one has ever called my Coll or Colly. It's always Leeny, Beany and Leeny Lou.-- abcolleenz79 7/17/2008
Any self respecting Irish person wouldn't touch it. It's a shame American fads have rubbed off.-- Anonymous User 10/3/2008
This name makes me think of a blonde, curly-haired girl who can be bossy and have a bad attitude. Now that I say that I will meet a girl with this name and she will be everything but a snot.-- _0TophasNails_1 12/26/2008
I don't get why this is popular. It's kind of boring and I hate the -een ending. Plus in Ireland, you would be made fun of for using it because no one there names their daughter Colleen.-- bananarama 4/7/2009
Colleen is kind of boring name of a girl. I really hate -een/ene endings. I much prefer names with an -ette ending like Colette.-- rowan826 4/14/2009
Colleen McCullough, author of The Thorn Birds and the Masters of Rome series.-- Patria-Sue 5/29/2009
