This name is also used in Ireland in the form of MacDara (literally translated means son of Dara). Even if a person's father goes by a different name it can still be used.

In Gaelic, "Dara" is the word for "second" (as in "after the first"; not time seconds). Second child heh-heh. Dara, as a name, is derived from "doire", which means oak wood or grove (the Gaelic word for oak is "dair"). Oaks are sacred trees in Celtic mythology, and appear in many legends. In fact, the word for a Celtic priest, druid, comes from the Celtic word for oak. The surname Mac Dara is a form of Mac Dubhdara which means "son of black oak". Doire is also the name of a city and county in Northern Ireland. It's English name is Derry (or Londonderry, if you prefer :p), but Dara is a much prettier anglicisation.

Pronounced dah-rah.

My first name is Dara, and since people seem to be incapable of pronouncing it correctly: It's "dare-uh", like Sara with a D.
-- GoldeneErde  4/20/2008
I like a lot of names that rhyme with this name, like Tara, Kara, and Lara, and Sara is also decent if overused and dull, but this name sounds a bit wrong. I just don't like the sound. It's ugly and heavy somehow.
