The meaning of Darya is "sea". The Turkish version of Darya is "Derya" which also means "sea" in Turkish. Derya is also metaphorically used as plentiful or copious.

The Amu Darya and Syr Darya are great rivers located in the Middle East (surrounding Uzbekistan and Tajikistan as well as parts of Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan.) The rivers are mainly used for irrigation and agriculture and empty into the Aral Sea. The Amu Darya and Syr Darya are also referred to as two of the four rivers of Paradise in medieval Islamic writings.
