"Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah, someone's in the kitchen I know...someone's in the kitchen with Dinah, strummin' on the ol' banjo...and singin' fee-fi-fiddly-i-oh..."
-- beautyofwords9  3/21/2006
Dinah Washington was a famous American blues, jazz and gospel singer, known as the "Queen of the Blues."
-- ars musica  4/9/2006
We should not forget the other lyrics: "Dinah won't you blow? Dinah won't you blow? Dinah won't yo blooooow?" No teenage girl wants the boys to sing THAT at her!
-- Starla Roxanne  9/18/2006
I think it would be a great name for a dog! Nice for a human, too, though.
-- nelirosala  10/21/2006
I don't like the pronunciation "DIE-na"; it's always sounded like a woman's intimate parts to me, if I may use such a phrase. It also sounds like a pampered rich girl. And then of course, you have "Dinah, won't you blow, Dinah, won't you blow, Dinah, won't you blow your horn?" Go with "DEE-nah".
-- gaelruadh19  1/20/2007
If I named my daughter this, people will sing "Dinah won't you blow, Dinah won't you blow, Dinah won't you blow your horn?" I don't want that to happen. Plus this name is too old-fashioned.
-- CharlieRob  5/6/2007
I didn't like this name at first, but it's grown on me. I think it would suit almost any personality. Maybe I'll use it as a middle name in the future.
-- scarletquillraven  6/19/2007
Actually, if you read the Hebrew, it's pronounced DEE-nah.
-- MizLaura  8/3/2007
I absolutely LOVE this name! It's so pretty and feminine without being common at all. I would definitely name my daughter this (although the "Dinah won't you blow" thing is a bit weird, but then how many teenagers out there actually know that tune nowadays?). It also makes me think of Alice and Wonderland, for obvious reasons.

Dinah Morris is a character in George Eliot's novel "Adam Bede."
-- Kate  11/16/2007
I love this name. Dinah from the Bible is a great association too.
-- Anonymous User  11/28/2007
I wouldn't use this name for my daughter, because of the fact that the character in the Bible was raped by Shechem, a Canaanite prince.
-- Bagpiper1989  1/24/2008
Very tacky. It makes me think of a woman smoking a cigarette and chewing gum at the same time.

Dinah "Black Canary" Lance, a DC Comics superhero.
-- FMRadio  3/20/2008
According to the original Hebrew, the name is actually pronounced DEE-nah, making the name "Deena" a nice alternative to this name.
-- Anonymous User  7/7/2008
After reading the novel "The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant, which depicts the life of the biblical Dinah the daughter of Jacob and Leah, I now have a new appreciation for this name.
-- namebug  7/7/2008
When I was 4 I named my first and only kitten Dinah. It's a pretty name.
-- Anonymous User  8/7/2008
It's grown on me. I like it better than "Diana".
-- Anonymous User  8/28/2008
This name can also be pronounced DEE-nə (also, I'm not positive, but I believe DEE-nə is the Biblically accurate pronunciation).
