Comments for EMI:
In Japan this name sounds the same as the word for "smile".-- Anonymous User 9/7/2005
Emi can also be used as a nickname for the name Emily.-- WeloveyouJesseLacey 11/27/2005
Pronounced like the English name Amy.
"E" can have meanings:
grace/beautiful
branch
picture
cove/inlet
"Mi" can be either "beautiful" or "fruit".-- abbasdaughter 12/26/2005
In the popular video game Dance Dance Revolution there is a character named Emi. It's also what my good conscience calls my bad conscience, named Emily.-- blackrosedye 7/27/2006
A nice nickname for Emily, though it looks too much like 'emo'.-- 7up 2/11/2007
I've got a gerbil called Emi. She first was called Amy but when I found the spelling 'Emi' of the name I decided to call her that. I like the meaning of it as well. It also sounds really nice and it has a different spelling from most of the names I know.-- Anonymous User 5/30/2007
Growing up, I was often called by my nickname and for some reason never visualized the name as "Emmy", but rather "Emi" -- probably since the time I was five years old. This is how I spell it to this day. I know one mother whose daughter is called Emilia after her Italian heritage, and her nickname is spelt "Emi".-- EmilyOlive 7/12/2008
My name is Emma and for quite some time my nickname has been Emi, but I never knew it was a Japanese name. I love Japanese names so I was delighted that I, a typical European white chick, would have a Japanese name with such a lovely meaning. :)
Of course, Emi was just short for Emma, but I like to think it's really my "Japanese name".-- emmiix3 2/7/2009
What could be a lovelier name for a darling girl than "beautiful blessing"?
Also, I'm confused by a comment up there a bit, especially by someone who claims Japan as their location. I've studied Japanese for 7 years, and no instructor or Japanese person I ever known would pronounce this in the same away as "Amy". There aren't diphthongs in Japanese the way there are in English. This would be pronounced with an E sound like the first sound in "ever".-- Aesha 7/8/2009
