First of all - my name is Ira, and I'm a girl! I think Ira is a masculine name mainly used in the USA. Also, Ira means "Hera" in Greek, who's the mother of all gods in Greek mythology.-- yummy 9/18/2005

This feminine name is pronounced "EE ra." (as Irina is pronounced "EE ree na") The R should be rolled, if possible.-- my_name_isobel 12/4/2008
Do NOT confuse the masculine form of Ira "EYE ra" with the feminine form "EE ra." They are not related linguistically.
Interestingly enough, there is a Welsh name, Eira, pronounced "EYE ra" (or possibly "AY ra" depending on the region in Wales.) This is also not to be confused with any of the above names.-- my_name_isobel 12/4/2008
I can't believe no one has mentioned this before, but every time I see "Ira" I think "Irish Republican Army". Need I really say anymore?-- Undine 3/10/2009
