Many people, myself included, interpret David and Jonathan's relationship to have been romantic. I'm a starry-eyed one in the first place...;)
-- gaelruadh19  7/19/2005
I disagree with the above comment. I believe the David and Jonathan loved each other as brothers, not as homosexuals.
-- AndrewJKD  11/10/2005
I go by JD (I know, initials are not names and totally kill the identity of a person), but my names are actually Jonatan David (Jonatan, swedish form of Jonathan) and I'm not going to be blatant about my preferences but I think what my point is. I'm Christian myself and know the bible very well having even served a mission for the church I'm affiliated with. I don't certainly know whether there was an intimate relationship between Jonathan and David, but I do feel that their love for each other was great. Like a perfect love among two childhood friends who grew up together and are so special for each other, not meaning that "something" had to happen between them because of their feelings, despite of their gender. Anyways, Jonathan and David are mostly remembered and told of as a pure example of frienship and love for another.

It is absolutely sick to suggest that King David and Jonathan were in a homosexual relationship!
1) David was married to Jonathan's sister, Michal. So you would be saying that they were not only in a homosexual relationship, but an incestuous homosexual relationship
2) Homosexuality is forbidden by the Torah. As good, observant Jews, David and Jonathan would both have been aware of this fact, and observed the commandment
3) If David had been a homosexual, he would not have been chosen to be king of Israel. That's a fact.
4) If David and Jonathan's relationship had been incestuous, it is unlikely that they would be cited as the ideal of brotherly love in "Ethics of Our Fathers". Particularly because, as mentioned above, homosexuality is forbidden by the Torah.
5) If David and Jonathan's relationship had been incestuous, they would not be considered such great ideals of Jewish observance, because - if you haven't caught on yet - the Torah forbids homosexuality. Also, it would probably be mentioned somewhere.

First of all, it's not incest if they're related to you BY LAW. Second of all, David and Jonathan fell in love BEFORE David married Jonathan's sister. And third and most importantly, all of the passages in the Bible - Old Testament and New - that are popularly interpreted as being about homosexuality are, in fact, mistranslations. Usually the actual sin they're referring to is either paganism, prostitution, promiscuity, or a lack of hospitality. For more information, please read "What the Bible REALLY Says About Homosexuality," "The Children Are Free," or "What Christians Think About Homosexuality: Six Representative Viewpoints."

Anyway. Beautiful name, beautiful LOVE story. Ahem.

The name is lovely. Both David and Jonathan easily beat out their Sapphic counterparts, Ruth and Naomi, in terms of nice-nameitude. But let's not get into that one.

I really like this name. Whenever I hear it I think of David's friend from the Bible. Jonathan was always one of my favorite characters in the Bible - he loved David no matter what, even when his Dad was trying to kill David (true friendship there). I would love to name my first son this.

I really like this name. I met a German boy with this name once and everybody called him Jonie. I really like the English and German pronunciation and the Dutch one is growing on me. I also love the name David so I like the fact that they were friends in the bible. (even though I'm the opposite of Christian)

I really love the name Jonathan and its conotations in the Bible. I actualy really love the combination Jonathan David, sounds so much like a boy who was strong in his convictions and passionate about his friends. I really like it and would name my first boy this.

My brother's name is Jonathan, so I pretty much love it, the meaning is so sweet 'god's gift' at least, that's what OUR family goes by, but I think Jon and Jonny are great pet-forms. I never call him Jonathan unless I am angry at him. Yeah, so two thumbs up for Jonathan.
-- leanerdnellalennelle  2/11/2008
I would want to name my first son David and give him Jonathan as a middle name. I think it's great that the names bear some sort of connection.

My brother is named Jonathan, and I always call him Jonny, however everyone else calls him Jon. I also have a friend called Jonathan (Jonty) and a friend with a baby brother Jonathan (Jonny). I think it leaves doors open for a lot of nicknames, which is always good for determining the child's personality. My first son will have this a nickname, after my brother.
-- entrel09  5/28/2008
This is one of those names that you can't really complain about, a very safe choice, sounds fairly pleasant, you can get decent nicknames out of it, suits all sorts of guys, and all that. Having said that, it's a pretty damn dull choice, and something lazy parents are likely to choose because they just pick whatever is common or whatever some relative is named. Still, this beats lazily constructed modern names.

Dr Jonathan Crane, also known as The Scarecrow of Batman fame. Interestingly enough, if you look up Dr Crane, you'll find that there is also a dermatologist by the same name. Poor guy; wonder if he gets much hassle for having the same name as a comic book villain.

I'm a little tired of Jonathan. There are at least 3 in my grade out of 300+ kids and all are fairly popular, so whenever you talk about them it's like "Which Jonathan? Jonathan ____ or Jonathan ____?" "No, the other Jonathan!"

This name is very popular! In 8th grade, I knew 2 people with this name, plus me. At that time, there were 2 7th-graders whose name was Jonathan. Now I'm a high-school freshman and 2 others have my name!

Anyway, in the Bible, I didn't see a friendship like Jonathan and David. Assuming one of them married a woman, they most likely weren't gay.
-- jonathan0012  10/16/2009
My best male friend in middle school was named Jonathan. He got into trouble pretty often but he was very sweet, the kind of guy who would carry your books for you if you needed help or would try and cheer you up if you were having a bad day. One of the few straight guys I knew who did not sexually harass us girls in eighth grade. That is the kind of person I think of when I hear the name Jonathan.
