A character in Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events is named Josephine. She is afraid of pretty much everything, and her greatest joy in life (before she's eaten by leeches) is grammar.

I find the name Josephine classic and charming but still not very pretty. I also find the nickname Josie cute, but rather weak. Jo makes a better, more substantial nickname into adulthood.

An evil woman is called this in the book I am writing. Needless to say, I am not particually fond of it, as I think it sounds snobby.

I think this name is very pretty and underused. It is old-fashioned and I like it. I might even name my daughter that. I would call her "Jo" for short, though.

My middle name, although it's spelled "Josefin". It's spelled that way beacause my parents thought "it was best to keep it simple". Now, I've learnt to like the spelling. In Sweden, the spelling "Josefin" is much more usual than "Josephine", although some people spell it "Josefine".

I really don't like the English pronunciation of the 'J', but in French it's much softer, you say it with the 'zh' sound. That sounds 100 times more pretty to me. Also the old nickname for Josephine is Fifi.
