Comments for KALI:

Also derived from the word 'kala' which means "time"- Kali being the dark one who controls the essence of time.

A more beautiful variation of the name 'Kali' is 'Kaliyani' or you may also use 'Kaliya.' Kaliyani is a ancient and medieval female name that is not so popular in India at this time.

This name has started to serve as a variant of Kayley, Kaylee, etc. Not my cup of tea.

Kali is also pronounced Kay-lee, not just Kah-lee. I also like the spelling "Hali" for Hailey, and they sound similar - Kali and Hali.

I love the dark feel of the name. Sorry, I'm kinda obsessed with dark- or evil-sounding names. I think it should be both feminine and masculine, though. But that's just my opinion.

The goddess Kali is fierce and destructive. Her name also means "Dark Female". Her worship is associated with skulls, cemeteries, and blood. She is black and gaunt, with an azure face streaked with yellow, and her gaze is considered ferocious. Her hair is shown as unkempt or splayed, and is sometimes braided with serpents. Her power is originative and destructive. The weapons or head of a demon she is usually seen holding symbolize this. No, I am not Hindu.

The name Kali is the name of an Hindu goddess who was thought to be a vampire who drinks the blood of animals only and protects her people from demons by carrying a sickel sword that she kills them with.

Well, my name's Kali and I'm proud of it! I don't really know what was going through my mom's head when she picked Kali, but I sure am glad I got such an unique name!

The name "Kali" could be connected with the Greek word "kalos", which means "beauty".

Another name for Shakti, who embodies both creation and destruction.

My dog's name is Kali pronounced KAH-li, but everyone pronounces it Kaylee. Kind of annoying since that is definitely not how it's spelled.
-- starfly2  10/25/2006
This name is NOT pronounced how it's spelled! It would be nice to say it like Kallie, rhyming with Hallie and Allie.

Actually, to the user above, I know two Kalis and they both pronounce it like Callie.

Love the sound, look and meaning of this name. It's so great. :)

I love this name, especially because of its dark meaning. I would have loved to name a child this, but the husband disagreed. So, I named one of my min pins this pronounced KAH-lee. Unfortunately, everyone seemed to pronounce it like Cali, the abbreviation for California.

I'm NEVER gonna think of the name Kali as 'dark' or 'sinister' due to my friend Kali (Kay-lee) being happy, bouncy and extremely huggy.

I have no problem with other pronunciations of 'Kali' because it all really depends on how you wanted it to be said.
