Comments for LEON:

The fifth or so king before Leonidas of Sparta was named Leon. That name is the source of the name Leon, Léon, Leo, León, Leonard, Leonidas, Leonid, Leonti and all of their feminine variants and is indeed the source of the name of the provinces in Spain and Mexico, as the Greeks explored and built temples in Spain long before the Romans got there.

Although it is currently enjoying steady popularity in Scandinavia and in the British Isles, it is actually more popular in Germany than any of those other areas. In the United States, however, it is considered to be in the same category as Elmer, Mortimer, Lester, Irving, and Wilbur in terms of being much less common today than it was a century ago.

Leon is one of the modern names in Germany that I find do unnervingly ungraceful and uninspired, but I've found out that this impression only refers to the German pronunciation of Leon and that in fact, I love the spelling of it. Since I know how Leon is pronounced in England etc. I love the English version. It's somehow gracious and strong at the same time. Very 19th century, in my opinion.

I like this name. It sounds more complete than Leo, and is a nice old-fashioned choice without looking too dated. However, I hate how this website calls it a Jewish name, because it is not.
