Louis should always be pronounced Lou-ee. Pronouncing Louis as Lew-is is wrong. And annoying!

Louis Riel was not a Canadian rebel. He was of Metis descent (First Nations and European). He provided leadership for Metis' during the Red River Rebellion. At that point in time, the Red River Valley was considered to be a part of Rupert's Land, not Canada, and only later in his life did he become a naturalized citizen of the USA, not Canada. He was hung for treason by the Canadian government.

I like this name quite a bit, but far prefer the pronunciation loo-EE to LEW-is. LEW-is just sounds odd and incorrect to me.

The English pronunciation is NOT LOO-is. This is a mistake, albeit a common one in America. "Lewis" is the English form, with the audible S.

I think this name is really beautiful. I would probably not use it though due to its similarity to Louise and Loser, which is such a shame as I love this name but kids today can be rather cruel and I would hate that to happen to my child as I was bullied about my name when I was at school. I think it would be a bit silly of me to give a child a name which I had doubts about and may possibly bring them the same unhappiness as myself, however my name is way more extreme!

I think this is a pretty nice name. The pronunciation LOO-ee seems more goofy and laid back to me, while Louis both funny and casual. I also find Louis to be a very sophisticated and formal name. I suppose the funny and casual bit I got from Even Stevens. It's a cool name.
