My name is actually Melanie. My mother actually named me for Scarlett's "friend" Melanie (Melanie was really Scarlett's cousin I think) and I am from the south (North Carolina to be exact). How's that for irony? But as far as the name references to other people in history, my middle name is Renee, which usually means born again. Go figure.

Melanie was not Scarlett's cousin. Melanie was Ashley's cousin. Unlike the Scarlet spelling above, Miss O'Hara's name was spelled with two Ts. She was not named after the color but a family name.

I like to think that Margaret Mitchell chose the name Melanie for that character because of the significance of the meaning "black, dark." Her character was meant to be symbolic of the gentlest aspects of the Old South (Scarlett of the fiercer, more passionate sides) and since those were the aspects that died with the war, the character of Melanie died trying to have a child. In other words, she died trying to make part of the Old South live on. The meaning of "black, dark" can be symbolic of all of this - death, mourning, etc.

Melanie is my mother's name. She is not named after the character of Melanie Hamilton Wilkes but I like to think that she is. She is like the character of Melanie in many ways. The character's nickname was Melly. My mother's nickname is spelled Mellie because my grandmother grew up in a community where "ie" spellings were just more popular in general.

This name is often used in Germany. I'm actually from Germany and I remember a few kids when I was younger called Melanie there. Melanie is often shortend to Mel (Mel.B, Mel.C) and people call me Melli a lot for short. I've read another meaning for Melanie somewhere else: 'Lady Of The Night'. I like the meaning of this name.

I believe that the name Melanie isn't limited to black or dark, but rather black or dark skinned. The beginning of the name 'Melan' comes from the word melanin meaning: a substance that gives the skin its color (also called pigment).
Other themes related to black or dark, would seem to make sense. I suppose it would depend on the culture of the person that had the name.
