Based on the Latin name "Melania" and brought to Britain in the Middle Ages. Melanie's composure goes with a lively sense of fun.-- HoneyBee_xx 9/8/2005
My name is actually Melanie. My mother actually named me for Scarlett's "friend" Melanie (Melanie was really Scarlett's cousin I think) and I am from the south (North Carolina to be exact). How's that for irony? But as far as the name references to other people in history, my middle name is Renee, which usually means born again. Go figure.-- melmel79 10/4/2005
Melanie was not Scarlett's cousin. Melanie was Ashley's cousin. Unlike the Scarlet spelling above, Miss O'Hara's name was spelled with two Ts. She was not named after the color but a family name.
I like to think that Margaret Mitchell chose the name Melanie for that character because of the significance of the meaning "black, dark." Her character was meant to be symbolic of the gentlest aspects of the Old South (Scarlett of the fiercer, more passionate sides) and since those were the aspects that died with the war, the character of Melanie died trying to have a child. In other words, she died trying to make part of the Old South live on. The meaning of "black, dark" can be symbolic of all of this - death, mourning, etc.
Melanie is my mother's name. She is not named after the character of Melanie Hamilton Wilkes but I like to think that she is. She is like the character of Melanie in many ways. The character's nickname was Melly. My mother's nickname is spelled Mellie because my grandmother grew up in a community where "ie" spellings were just more popular in general.-- Gwenllian 2/8/2006

This name is often used in Germany. I'm actually from Germany and I remember a few kids when I was younger called Melanie there. Melanie is often shortend to Mel (Mel.B, Mel.C) and people call me Melli a lot for short. I've read another meaning for Melanie somewhere else: 'Lady Of The Night'. I like the meaning of this name.-- mellimoon 2/23/2006
Melanie (from All Saints).
There was a singer in the 70's (or 80's) called Melanie and that is who my mother named me after. Melanie Safka, another singer. Melanie Griffith, another celeb.-- mellimoon 2/23/2006
This name is very beautiful. It's very gentle and laid-back, in my opinion.-- websurfer 3/31/2006
I have always liked the sound of this name. It is feminine but not weak. It is pretty. Not overly used or fadish either.-- Anonymous User 4/25/2006
I believe that the name Melanie isn't limited to black or dark, but rather black or dark skinned. The beginning of the name 'Melan' comes from the word melanin meaning: a substance that gives the skin its color (also called pigment).
Other themes related to black or dark, would seem to make sense. I suppose it would depend on the culture of the person that had the name.-- Anonymous User 5/23/2006
Such a lovely name, I just love it!-- LittleLilly 8/16/2006

According to a Greek woman I used to know, "Melanie" means "honey," not "dark" or "black" as everyone seems to think. I trust what this woman told me, because she spoke fluent Greek (and was Greek).-- Anonymous User 1/9/2007
I love the name Melanie because of the Gone With The Wind Character, and also a really cool friend of mine. I am struck by the irony of the fact that as I type this I'm watching the scene in The Outsiders movie where Ponyboy reads from the book.-- YMPvt 3/11/2007

I quite like the name Melanie, it's pretty. My mother was called Melanie Christina, and she hated it, and would ignore anyone who called her Melanie, so everyone called her Tina. I wouldn't name any of my children Melanie though, as a middle name, due to the fact that my mother hated it, I'd use Christina or Tina as the middle name.-- SuicuneGem 3/9/2008
Czech pronunciation is "ME-lah-ni:ye".-- Karcoolka 4/25/2008
Name Day celebrated 30th of June in Czechia.-- MaggieSimpson 5/7/2008
I personally prefer the sound of meh-LAHN-ie to mel-AH-nie. The second is a bit childish, while the first can be youthful, but it can also be older.-- themoongirl 7/2/2008

I've known many Melanies in my life and while I liked most of them, I can't help but associate this name with Melanie's Mall. It sounds like a name for a snobby, stuck up girl.-- slyboots 11/15/2009
