In both the novel and the musical "Wicked" the sister of The Wicked Witch of the West, a.k.a. The Wicked Witch of the East, is named Nessarose.-- lavieboheme1993 10/21/2006
I really love the names Nessa and Nesser and Nestor.-- honungspinglan 1/7/2007
Also used as a pet name for Agnes, mostly in Scotland. Nessie and Nessy are not as popular anymore, partly because they are used as nicknames for the Loch Ness Monster.-- Anonymous User 1/17/2007
I love the name Nessa! I think it's a great name that can be used for all ages. It flows well with other names and has several possible meanings and usages. Just look them up! I've been told it means: 'Holy' in Irish Gaelic, 'Second' in Cornish, and is the feminine form of Ness which I'm told is a male Scottish name or word meaning Nose or a portion of land sticking out into a body of water AKA a Loch. =) But I don't know any of this to be factual for certain. I did pick the name because of Scottish roots, the possibility of the meaning of "second" and that it's the name of the Mother of Conor, King of Ulster. And I find that really cool. So I found it very suitable for my situation. And have been told several times, "Oh that would make such a gorgeous name for a little girl".
It is one of my most favorite names of all time. And I would be proud to use it for a human, if I didn't already have a dog named Nessa =) I hope I haven't ruined the name for anyone!
"Nessa was the mother of Conchobhar (Conor) Mac Nessa, king of Ulster. A powerful and beautiful woman, ambitious for her son, she tricked her second husband, Fergus, into giving up his kingdom to his stepson, Conchobhar (Conor), for a year, but Conchobhar (Conor) ruled so wisely and so well that the people chose him to be their permanent king."-- ASLBankes 2/11/2008
I don't even like Vanessa. This name sounds too little-girl-like to me.-- slight night shiver 5/1/2008

A well know pet form of this name is Nissel / Nisel.-- Miss Claire 12/5/2004
Nessa seems more like a nickname for someone with the name Vanessa, like my cousin.-- Jinx 3/26/2006
Pronounced neh-sah.-- Miss Claire 7/29/2006
In actuality Nessa reminds me (somewhat) of the "name" of the Wicked Witch of the East according to Gregory Maguire's 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West', which is Nessarose. Nessarose was born unable to walk due to her mother's eating milkweed during pregnancy to avoid another green-skinned child like Elphaba (Witch of the West), and due to the somewhat-miracle of Elphaba enchanting the silver/ruby shoes their father had given Nessarose, Nessarose could now walk. That's what Nessa, meaning "miracle", reminds me of.-- Tiffany Twisted 8/2/2006
I think that this is a beautiful name for a child, especially if the meaning 'miracle' really affects you and your husband.-- bobcat_explorer 1/13/2007
The Hebrew word for "miracle" is "ness", which as a name is pretty rare but can be used for both genders (though I've only ever met one Ness, and he was male.) "Nessa" would be a strictly feminine variant.-- noae 9/15/2007
If I was to put any associations of the character from Wicked aside, I would think this is a very good name. And the meaning of miracle is fantastic (at least I think so). It suggests the color pink to me.-- Pippin 3/16/2008
I like the name Nessa and the meaning of miracle is my favourite. I use the name Nessa-Rose for a character in a story and I've only just learned that there's a famous character in Wicked named Nessarose.-- renee06 4/12/2008
