The original Navajo word is pronounced NI (like the beginning of nick) ZHO (the ZH being like the S in Asian or casual with the O marked with an acute accent) and NI (sounding like the beginning of nick again with the I having an acute accent). It looks like this: nizhóní and said is said ni-ZHO-NI.
However, when used as a name, it is pronounced NI (same) ZHO (now the O sound is long) and NI (the I is given a long E sound). It is said ni-ZHO-nee.-- Anonymous User 12/10/2008
