On Star Trek: DS9, Odo is the name of the security officer. He is a shape-shifter, and his name was derived from a Bajoran word meaning "unknown sample."

The DS9 character's name is short for the Cardassian word Odo'ital, meaning "nothing." The Bajoran scientists referred to him as Odo Ital so that it was like a Bajoran name, and he eventually went by just Odo, since in the Bajoran tradition the first name is the family name.
