I really like "Scarlet" more than "Scarlett". I don't know why. I guess its spelling is more unusual. I would name my daughter like this.

The first daughter of Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page is Scarlet. I can't decide whether or not I like it with one or two t's. If I had a son I would name him Phoenix and possibly my daughter Scarlet. Both bear the meanings of a deep, dark red, which is cute. It seems to look overdone as "Scarlett" but "Scarlet" is the straight color that you WILL find on a Crayola crayon.

This spelling has a longer period of use as a girl's name. It's beautiful and full of zing. I would rather see this over muddy Sienna.

Scarlets were very fine and expensive woolen cloths. Common in Medieval England. Scarlet cloth could also be green, blue, brown or white. The most common was crimson or carmine red hence Scarlet now being chiefly a colour word.

During the reign of Henry VIII, crimson/carmine red Scarlet was forbidden to servants. It was considered a very distinguished color. Some laws even forbade certain "classes" from wearing it.

"In all Western European languages the words for 'Scarlet' developed first as a noun for the textile itself and only later became to be applied as an adjective to describe the colour. Furthermore, even though many woolen scarlets did indeed have that rich red colour, perhaps most by the very end of the Middle Ages, many had instead been dyed in a wide variety of other colours - and some were even considered to be 'white'."

Melanie Chisholm aka Sporty Spice's daughter is Scarlet (Starr). Starr being the surname of Scarlet's father, Thomas. Scarlet with Starr seems a bit flamboyant and cheesy.

Scarlet is the name of the little girl in Silent Hill Homecoming who was sacrificed for a weird ritual, and is also the name of the monster that "she becomes", the giant doll you fight in Hell Descent. Because of this, I really like this name.
