Possibly when this name is found in Landnámabók, it comes from the name of Sigyn, the wife of Loki. It is found in old Danish as Sighni, old Swedish as Sighne and old Norse as Signý. A shortened form of it, and other names beginning with Sig-, is Sigga.

In Sweden it's usually "Signe" and its pronunciation is like the English word "sing" but with "ne" on the end. SING-ne.
