Lisa Bonet & Lenny Kravitz have a daughter named Zoe.
-- Anonymous User  12/20/2005
I don't like the names Zoe and Chloe either. I agree that they sound like pet names. I feel sorry for the children. I think that these parents need to be bonked in the head a few times because they don't think straight.
-- dmforsythe  12/22/2005
Ew! I think that this name is over-used; too many people think of it as "original" just because it starts with a Z. If you have to name your daughter Zoe, though, it is much more tolerable with the accent tréma over the "e".
-- Anonymous User  12/29/2005
I love this name! It's like my dream name, it might not be original but it's not over used and it can be pronounced in both English and French.
-- Jinx  1/8/2006
I really don't like this name. Both its sound and spelling are simply terrible and monstrous, not beautiful and womanlike at all.
-- Lily Anastasia  3/3/2006
I might have liked this name if it weren't for a really nasty person I know with this name. I also heard the Zoe in Japanese means elephant.
-- Anonymous User  4/26/2006
Zoe Caldwell, Australian actress. (When she appeared on the Dick Cavett show, he pronounced her first name "Zo." I do not know if this is how she pronounces it or if she just didn't want to correct him.)
-- Kosta  5/10/2006
I have a niece named Zoe (at least I THINK that's her spelling of it) and I love the name no matter what anyone says. I just love it because I love my niece, even though I've never met her, nor have I ever met her daddy--my half-brother.
-- living_in_narnia  5/10/2006
I think Zoe is a very classic name. It is very well going out of date but maybe its nickname (I don't know any) will bring some of it's character back.
-- kikiola  6/1/2006
Zoe is a character on Sesame Street.
-- Tudor  6/14/2006
I like this name. It is meaningful, graceful and lady-wise. I also like Greek. I chose this name because it pronounces similar to my Chinese name.
-- zoeksy  7/5/2006
A very beautiful Australian supermodel Zoe Loveland bears the name.
-- audreyhubley  8/29/2006
Zoegirl sings Christian pop music.
-- Anonymous User  11/11/2006
I disagree with anyone who says Zoe is a bad name. I find it very modern and I think it's a great name.
-- flipflop1215  12/5/2006
The pronunciation of this name doesn't make any sense without the Y. ZOE looks like it is pronounced like ZOH. I prefer Zoey.
-- Taydbug112  12/14/2006
Melina Kanakaredes & Peter Constantinades have a daughter Zoe, born 23 May 2000.
-- Maggie_Simpson  12/18/2006
Name of the main character in Cirque du Soliel's Quidam. I think it was meant to symbolize originality, like the character.
-- dramaelf  12/28/2006
I love love love short and sweet names.

Zoe is cute for while you're a newborn to when your 20+. Can you imagine trying to get a job and saying "Hi my name is Zoe Mikayla Smith"? No one is going to take you seriously. If you had to pick between hiring someone with the name "Zoe" and someone with the name "Hannah" don't you think it would be the smarter choice to pick the woman with the name Hannah? Yes this all depends on what work force you're going to be going into, but doesn't everyone want what's best for their kids? It is said that the people with more "traditional" names get hired first. I also don't think that a 60 year old woman is going to want to have her name be Zoe. Everybody think of this, name your child "Elizabeth Zoe" and just call her "Zoe". People go by their middle names all the time, they will have a name for while they are on the job (Elizabeth) and they will have a name for while they are with friends and family.
-- Anonymous User  1/28/2007
Zoe is a very old, classic sort of name really; it's a saint's name and it was in the top 1000 one hundred years ago. I don't think it sounds unprofessional or anything.
-- Anonymous User  7/11/2007
One day all the grandmothers will be called Zoe, Chloe, Ashley and Jennifer and no one will name their daughters those names because they will be associated with the older generation. Think about it: if names are popular only recently OF COURSE it will sound young because we are not used to hearing of older people with these names. A long time ago I bet people were saying "Don't call your daughter Shirley/Ethel/Hilda etc, it sounds cute now but when they're older it won't!" But now we associate it with older people, just as this name will someday be, along with its variants Zoey etc.

My name is Zoe, and I love my name, my mum picked well thank you very much, and to you all that don't like it, go to hell and look at your own name because I bet it's a laugh!
-- Anonymous User  2/24/2007
Zoe is an adorable name! Very cute and spunky.
-- Anonymous User  3/20/2007
Zoe is a very pretty name. I know a lady who just had a baby girl and named her Zoey. Here where we live you don't see this name often.
-- Anonymous User  5/7/2007
Zoe was a Byzantine empress. She was one of the few empresses "born into the purple" (that is, the child of a reigning emperor).
-- mymymetrocard  7/6/2007
Ehh. To me, the name Zoe is quite ugly.
-- Anonymous User  7/8/2007
Zoe Jennifer/Madison MacPherson is the eldest sibling in the comic strip Baby Blues.
-- LMS  7/30/2007
I have a Greek cousin named Zoe and when we visit Greece people always comment on how Greek the name Zoe is.
-- 123sly  8/11/2007
My late mother's name was Zoe. She was born in 1928, when the name was very unusual. It was her mother's middle name and had been in the family for a long time. My mother absolutely hated it and refused to use it even as a middle name for any of her four daughters. I think she was just the type of person who couldn't handle having an unusual name. When I had a daughter I gave her Zoe as a middle name. I really did it at the time just to honor the family tradition but the name has since grown on me. I'm happy to see it climbing the popularity charts. My mother would be amazed by that!
-- queenv  9/21/2007
I think it is sweet sounding, but seems overused. I think that spelling it with the tréma/diareses (Zoë) not only makes it sound more mature, but also hints that it is not pronounced "Zo" to the uninformed. :-)
-- mhavril39  9/24/2007
The sister name of "Chloe". Annoying people name their girls Zoe. They think it sounds exotic and French.
-- johann14  9/25/2007
I'd like to point out that it is not uninformed to pronounce this name as ZO and not ZO-E. My mother's name was Zoe. It was a family name going way back and it was always pronounced ZO in our family. My college roommate's name was Zoe and she also pronounced it this way. It is not a mispronunciation to do so. Either pronunciation is correct, although I realize that ZO-E is far more common.
-- queenv  10/20/2007
I am like so confused. Is this name pronounced ZOH or ZOH - EE? I don't like this or `Zoey`. I like `Zoie`, pronounced ZOH - EE. I think it has a lot of spunk. If I had to choose, though, I'd pick this over `Zoey`.
-- The Commenter  11/9/2007
I really like this name. I don't know anyone named Zoë, so it's pretty original here in the Netherlands. I might name my child Zoë, if I ever have a daughter.
-- DeniseClaire  11/25/2007
I think this name is cute and lively, and it reminds me of happiness and love. I named my puppy this, too. It's an adorable name!
-- Wilted  12/9/2007
Nice name for a puppy or for a young girl. But can you imagine being eighty years old and still being called Zoe? arghhh.
-- Ligeia  1/3/2008
Zoe Heriot, a companion of the Second Doctor on "Doctor Who".
-- FMRadio  2/2/2008
Also used in Ireland.
-- Dianna475  3/28/2008
Zoe is the name of a female warrior in Joss Whedon's Firefly, she's a really strong character (and she can kill you with her pinky).
-- Tahemet1491  4/9/2008
My mother's name was Zoe, as I've already mentioned. I have to laugh at the comment that it's hard to imagine being eighty years old and having the name Zoe, because my mother would have been eighty years old this year if she were still alive. I don't think there's anything too cutesy or little girl-ish about this name at all. My mother lived to be fifty-four years old, and the name always seemed perfectly suitable for her. People think this way only because Zoe has just relatively recently become popular, so right now the vast majority of its bearers are little girls. But it's a name that ages with its bearers perfectly well.
-- queenv  4/25/2008
This is such a cute name. I will consider it if I have a daughter.
-- number1212  4/26/2008
A famous bearer is actress Zoe Zaldana Nazario.

Actress Rosanna Arquette and John Sidel have a daughter Zoe Sidel (born 1994).
-- Emilie007  6/5/2008
Although this name has become very popular where I live - I don't like it. It reminds me of zoo and though I like going to the zoo (it's one of my favorite places) I wouldn't name a girl after it. In addition, there are no nicknames for Zoe, so if you name a child this she's stuck unless she wants to call herself Zo or Z. Maybe it would be ok for a middle name. It has a nice meaning.
-- KayeKiLa  8/13/2008
Someone posted that Zoe meant "God Life" or "Great faith." That is actually wrong. Zoe comes from ancient Greece. During Ancient Greece, people worshiped many gods/goddesses and did not practice Christianity until much later. So, the name Zoe was adopted by Judaism and Christianity later when people were being converted. The name simply means "life."
-- Coffeebean  11/22/2008
Zoe is the main character in the book Aimee by Mary Beth Miller. The book does not mention her name until the last 10 pages of the book.
-- bibi66  2/22/2009
100% Greek. A Greek word meaning life, that's all.
-- the_judge  2/27/2009
This is such an ugly name. I'm sorry. People just think they're being unique and cute using a "Z" name. I would hate to have this name. There's much nicer, more feminine names than ZOE.
-- becca_marciano  3/6/2009
While the name literally means "life" in Greek, it is used in the Bible to mean "spirit life."
-- Anonymous User  3/9/2009
How can you go wrong with a name that means LIFE? (Greek)
-- 89031  3/12/2009
This is my 3-year-old cousin's name. My aunt chose it after asking her older daughter, who was five at the time, what name she liked for a girl. Abby chose Zoe, after her favorite Sesame Street character. My aunt thought it looked and sounded nice with the middle name she had picked--Elena, after my grandmother, who had recently died. I've always seen this name as ancient yet modern, elegant yet spunky. I think it suits my little cousin pretty well.
-- britto08  3/27/2009
In reply to the negative comments of this name, being called Zoe has never stopped me from getting anywhere in life. I like that my name is a little unusual and I would hate to be called something common. I have always had positive comments and don't think I will dislike it or feel ridiculous when I get to eighty.
-- Zoe.E  4/20/2009
I really like this name, but think that it's a bit too popular. If you looked in a school, you would probably find several people named Zoe. My friend is named Zoe, and she likes her name only it annoys her to no end when people spell it "Zoey". It kind of annoys me too, it seems as though the Y is only put there to make it more feminine or because too many people would pronounce it Zo. I like this name, but I think that it's a little short and there isn't very much room for nicknames and sounds a little young.
-- Summah  6/29/2009

Comments for ZOÉ:

Finally, a pronunciation of Zoe that is true to the spelling. And quite pretty it is, too.
-- gaelruadh19  1/20/2007
I like this pronunciation better, and the dash over the 'e' makes the name way cooler.
-- 7up  2/7/2007
There is a rock band from Mexico who are named this. Actually, they're a pretty good band, I've become a great fanatic of some of the songs I've listened to. :)
-- Edgestein  4/19/2007
The pronunciation zo-ay seems to mimick an English accent. In French this is zo-eh.
-- Anonymous User  6/5/2008

Comments for ZOË:

Ick. I dislike Chloe and Zoe. They sound like names for pets, not people.
-- Mommy2B  5/5/2005
I love the name Zoe. It has a beautiful meaning in Greek and I know a really interesting, sweet person with this name.
-- BelCanto142  5/21/2005
This was St. Catherine Laboure's given name (pronounced the French way).
-- mariej2  6/4/2005
I love my name as it's not very common but it's also not silly like some of the names you hear today. Some modern names sound made up!
-- Zoe.N  6/8/2005
This name was also used as an honourific for Roman commanders if they had been especially courageous.
-- serasin  6/9/2005
My favourite name, it is great! Love the meaning as well.
-- sjzone  12/5/2005
I think the name Zoe has one of the best meanings, and it isn't all that common, so it is quite an honour for Zoe to be your name.
-- Anonymous User  4/20/2006
My friend is named Zoë, and I think it is pretty, graceful, elegant and not too common. I just think the different spellings of Zoe are difficult.
-- swisssugar  5/22/2006
I love this name! What a great meaning, too.
-- nelirosala  7/30/2006
This name is perfectly fine for anybody. Besides, just because it is overused doesn't mean you can't use it. A long time ago, names like Ashley or Jennifer were unique, but now look at them.

Zoë was the girl who was murdered in the book Saving Zoë.
-- Anonymous User  9/13/2007
I think it makes people look really dumb to spell this name without the diareses on the "e". Besides, if you don't spell it Zoë, it makes it a lot easier for strangers to pronounce the name as "zo".
-- mhavril39  10/10/2007
This is my name. To the people who commented above (to the Zoe spelling): I am taken seriously by people, my name has not detracted from my credibility. This is a wonderful name, especially with this spelling. :)
-- Anonymous User  3/13/2008
I think the name sounds quite harsh with the 'z' at the beginning, and also with the ''oh'' and ''ee'' sounds following one another. Chloë sounds softer. The name sounds a bit youthful despite being nothing new.
-- slight night shiver  5/13/2008
Zoë Nightshade was a ex-Hesperides who was Artemis' lieutenant in the third book of the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series.
-- GreekMythology  8/7/2008
I like it better with the double dots over the E. Otherwise, it looks like it's pronounced "ZO".
-- Jesussaves7193  1/3/2009
I think that this name is a very nice one. I don't like Zoe without the umlaut on the end, because that way it looks incomplete.
