Hiragana

Hiragana is a writing system used to represent the Japanese language. It is a syllabary, meaning there is a distinct symbol for each possible syllable in the language.

Hiragana are used to represent words for which there are no kanji. A handful of Japanese names (mostly female names) are written in hiragana instead of kanji.
