Portuguese Names

Portuguese names are used in Portugal, Brazil, and other Portuguese-speaking regions. Most people have one or two given names, followed by two or more surnames. The first surname is inherited from the mother's paternal surname, the second (considered the primary surname) is inherited from the father's paternal surname. In some cases both the maternal and paternal surnames of the parents are passed to the child, creating a long full name.

Portuguese given names are often taken from the names of saints. See European names. There are also many names which honour the Virgin Mary. Some of these, for example Dores and Neves, are taken from titles of Mary, while others such as Assunção and Inmaculada refer to events in her life.

The word name in Portuguese is nome.
