A famous bearer of this name is the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman (1603 - October 10, 1659). Tasman discovered New Zealand (well was the first known European to sight NZ) which he named Staten Landt on the assumption that it was connected to an island (Staten Island, Argentina) at the south of the tip of South America. He also was the first to sight Tasmania.

Abel Antón Rodrigo (born October 24, 1962 in Ojuel, Soria) is a Spanish long-distance runner, who won gold medals in the marathon at the 1997 and the 1999 World Championships in Athletics. In 1998 Antón became the first Spanish runner to win the London Marathon. He also won the 10.000 m title at the 1994 European Championships in Athletics.

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, known professionally as The Weeknd, is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer. In late 2010, Tesfaye anonymously uploaded several songs to YouTube under the name "The Weeknd". He released three nine-track mixtapes throughout 2011: House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence, which were critically acclaimed. The following year, he released a compilation album Trilogy, thirty tracks consisting of the remastered mixtapes and three additional songs. It was released under Republic Records and his own label XO.
