Meaning & History

Possibly derived from Greek ἀδίαντον (adianton) meaning "maidenhair" (a plant, species Adiantum capillus-veneris) or ἀδίαντος (adiantos) meaning "unwetted, not bathed in sweat", from the negative prefix ἀ (a) and the verb διαίνω (diaino) "to wet, to moisten". In Greek mythology Adiante was one of the 50 daughters of Danaus (the Danaids).
