The name Africa can also be taken from a title of the Virgin Mary, "Santa María de África." This could explain its popularity in Spain.

Surprisingly, this name, spelled Africa or Afrika, also has origins in Scotland, where it means "pleasant" in Gaelic. [noted -ed]
