Meaning & History

The first element of this name is either derived from Greek ἆγειν (agein) meaning "to carry, to fetch" or from Greek ἄγω (ago) "to guide, to lead" (also see Agis). The second element is derived from Greek πόλις (pólis) meaning "city, city state". This name was borne by three Agiad kings of Sparta.
