Latinized form of Greek Ἄλκηστις (Alkestis), a derivative of Greek ἀλκή (alke) "defense, defensive strength, valour". In Greek legend this was the name of a princess who offered to die in her husband ADMETUS' place. She was later rescued from the Underworld by HERACLES and reunited with Admetus, who was also allowed to live. She was the title heroine of Euripides' tragedy 'Alcestis' (438 BC).
