I like it, but I think I just know people who don't suit it.
I think an Alexandra is someone with fair skin, dark hair and light eyes.
My sister is named Alexandra, and since I'm a quarter Lebanese, my sister got the genes from the Arabic side and to be honest doesn't suit her name. She has darker skin, with dark hair, brown eyes.
I think Alexandra is by far one of the most beautiful names out there. Its full potential is underappreciated due to its tendency to get nicknamed.
This name makes me think of a fearless black haired woman. This is a great name. I love the masculine form Alexander too. Both are equally great names IMO.
When I think of the name Alexandra I think of a girl with long black or dark brown hair, fair skin, big blue eyes who overall is a pretty and ambitious smart young girl with a bright future ahead of her.
A beautiful, regal name, with strength and power. Alexandra stands tall and stands out in a crowd, she's fierce but loyal and has a good heart.
I've always loved Alexander, but I've only recently warmed to its feminine form. Maybe its because Aleksandra is ubiquitous in Poland, where I'm from, and nearly all women and girls named Aleksandra go by the lacklustre Ola. I think strong and regal Alexandra works best on its own - nicknames like Alex, Lexi, Alexa, or Xandra cheapen it.
The name definitely is regal and classy however I have found it to be too long most of the time, and its full beauty is hardly recognised in casual conversation. What is the point of having such an elegant and dignified name only for it to always be shortened to some chavvy childish nickname like Alex or Ali? The name itself almost forces you to sell yourself short. I would also be hesitant to use it because of the connection with Rasputin and the cursed Romanov family, as well as the Greek goddess Cassandra who was also cursed.
My middle name is Alexandra and I used to not like it but after reading all the positive comments I am now proud of being a Alexandra.
A decent name. Nobody would get bullied being named this.
Alexandra is a pretty solid name! It’s popular among my generation, though. However, not as popular as Alexis (a favorite name of mine). I love the vast majority of nicknames that Alexandra has to offer. Plus, it sounds nice in full!
I think Alexandra is the most beautiful name in the world.
I'm an Alexandra! I was named for Salome Alexandra who was a Jewish Queen meaning I was very proud of it. I hate getting nick-named Alex since I'm very proud I'm a girl and don't like it when people call me something masculine. If you wanna go by Alex it's fine, I simply dislike it. Xandra's the major nickname I go by but only by family. Reading this page has shown me all the amazing nicknames and shown me more possibilities for my name. Only problem with Xandra is it tends to be hashtagged by games such as Roblox, no clue why.
For anyone considering choosing this name or who has this name, it's lovely. You can change it a lot as you've probably noticed and it's easy to pronounce. You may need to explain the spelling a lot. I always tell people to spell it Alex and ra.
This was almost my name and I really wish it was! There is a strong, dignified beauty in this name. I like the length and the meaning. I don’t really like any of the nicknames though - maybe Lex or Andra would be nice and more unusual.
Top of our girl name list. We also do not like the nickname Alex and Alexa is no longer an option. Maybe Lexa?
Alexandra is beautiful! I like how it goes along with Alexander.
I prefer the spelling with "ks" - Aleksandra. I don't know why, just like how it looks.
I’ve always liked this and am considering for our daughter. However, with the “Alexa”, that’s no longer a nickname option and we really don’t care for the nickname Alex!
I really like this name and I completely agree with the previous commenter that it is usable for many different personality types. Plus many nickname possibilities is a bonus. It's sophisticated and strong is the impression I always come away with. I'd totally give it consideration if not for the fact that I have an ex named Alexander but if not for this fact I think I would totally consider it. If you are considering it yourself I think it's a completely usable classic.
Alexandra is a very pretty name, in my opinion. “Suitable”, if you will, for many different types of personalities, such as girly-girls, tomboys, introverts, extroverts, athletes, artists, etc., it has an abundance of strong potential nicknames, and its meaning (“defender of humankind”) is incredibly empowering as well. I think Alexandra would make a good name for a defense attorney. Or anybody, really ;)
To me this sounds incomplete without the -dria.
This name is so cool! It works great with a girly girl, tomboy, or both. And all the nickname opportunities are awesome! (Alex, Alexis, Alexa, Lexi, Lex, Ally, Ali, Andra, Andy, Sandra, Sandy, Sasha, Alice, possibly even more)
This is so incredibly gorgeous.
Alexandra, the full version, is objectively gorgeous. I'm totally confident in saying that. The problem is... well, nicknames. Alexander for boys (also handsome) is incredibly popular, and other than a handful bucking trends and going by "Xander" they're nearly all called "Alex." And since Alexandra is a four-syllable name, a nickname is inevitable - and it seems like most Alexandras go by "Alex" as well (though in these comments I've seen a few who go by Alexa).Basically, what I'm saying is I can't even tell you how many people named "Alex" I know. Alex & Chris are the two most played out nicknames (any gender) in the Anglophone world. So the dilemma becomes: how to avoid being just another Alex? If I were to use this name, I'd most likely push for the nickname Ally, like the actress Ally Sheedy (whose real name is Alexandra), and hope people wouldn't think my daughter's name was Allison. I thought about Xandra, but it just looks and sounds like it's trying too hard. I've never liked Lexi, it reeks "high school bully cheerleader from the 90s" to me. Lex could possibly work (like the kid in "Jurassic Park"), if people don't constantly make references to Lex Luthor.
Hi, my name is Alexandra but I go by Alexa but I've been called Alex, Alexis, Ale, Alesandra. One thing is that it is also not that unique and one year there where about 4 Alexandra's in my class. I would give it a 6/10. I still like it and I like how it sounds.
This is my absolute favorite girl's name! I also really love the names Clarissa, Alexandria, and Alexa. Top 4 names!I love the nicknames, the length, best of all how it sounds. The "Alex" names all have that in common with each other! I, however, hate the name Alexandrina. I hate the nasal "drina", yuck!
I have had a bad experience with this name in the past, but it's strong, and beautiful!
Beautiful and noble-sounding name with so many possible diminutives!
Strong name, mature, elegant, feels good! Alexandra has class and beauty! Really popular, still going strong, because this is a name with stability and good quality!
The nickname Ali is absolutely ADORABLE!
VERY plain. Not bad, it's just tired.
This is my sister's name. It's classic but I actually like it! It reminds me of a wise and strong woman like my sis. Everyone around her calls her "Alexa", but in family sometimes we call her "Alex". If you choose this name for your child, everybody's gonna use the short versions of it.
We almost went with this for our daughter. Love the nickname Ali but worried about the possible nickname Alex. We decided on Aliana, a softer sounding name and we can still call her Ali❤️.
My name is actually Alexandra and but as you can see by my username, I go by a fairly popular nickname, Sasha. I like my name, going by Alexandra at school, Alex in places where I don't have any close friends, and my friends call me Sasha. I never really thought of Alex as too masculine, and it kind of prevents people thinking of me as a girly girl, which I am not, I have adapted to the name fairly recently, and no one really makes assumptions coming from my name. I am a very shy, introverted person, and I think that my name kind of reflects that. I feel like my name gives me some good first impressions when I meet someone, giving an impression of maturity and formality. There are also a few celebrities who go by Alexandra, such as Alexandra Daddario, who plays in Baywatch and as Annabeth in the Percy Jackson movies. There is also Alexandra Shipp, who plays in X-Men and Dark Phoenix. In other words, I think the name Alexandra is strong, powerful, and overall a beautiful name.
This is my middle name and I love it.
I really dislike this name. It sounds too harsh and masculine to me, especially the nickname Alex - YUCK! I prefer Alessandra.
Sounds incomplete. I prefer Alexandria.
This is my daughter's name and we call her Lexi for short. Her sister is Victoria (Tori). I always get so many compliments about their names. Classic and strong but feminine.
Not a fan. I prefer Alessandra.
So pretty! I am a huge fan of Alexandra and its variants. I love the meaning, "defender of man", and love how this name is so versatile. If you want to name your child Alexandra, be aware that there is a possibility of there being another Alexandra in her class, and she will possibly have to specify which Alexandra she is. If you like Alexandra, but don't like how common this name is, try going with Alexandria, Alexandrea, or Alexandrina. If you still wish to name your child Alexandra, try giving her a unique nickname. Ali, Aly, Ally, Alli, Alie, Allie, Alex/Alix/Alyx, Alexa, Alexina, Alisa, Lexi/Lexie/Lexy, Lexa, Lexine, Sandra, Zandra, Xandra, or Sandy/Sandie are nice. :)
So beautiful. I would use this in a heartbeat.
I feel comfortable with this name. My name is actually Alexandra. I feel like my full name is too formal, so my friends and family call me Alex. In Russia, Alexandra, Alexander, and other nicknames of the base name(s) would be called Sasha. I don't hate that name, but it's not the BEST. But I do like the name Alexandra, and its meaning: 'protector of mankind'.
I love this name! It’s like a leader and strong name, Alexandra. Also, I just know that it can be shortened into Sandra or Xandra, besides Alexa.
Alexandra is classy and has influence in every culture because of Alexander the Great. I don't think it needs a nickname but my favorite nickname for Alexandra is actually Sasha, I think that sounds so fun and unique- better than Alex, even though it's a perfectly fine nickname. It's a perfect name for a daughter: multicultural, gorgeous, regal and is going down in popularity. 13/10 will be using: Alexandra Elizabeth, just like Alex Kingston.
Sorry to all Alexandra’s, it’s not you, it is just my personal feeling about the name. There are five Alexandras in my grade. One in the grade above me. One in the grade lower. It’s ridiculous!I don’t find this that unique, either. I’m just bored of it and I don’t want to hear it so much anymore considering how common it is.But it’s very versatile. All five Alexandras surprisingly go by different names in the grade, thank god. Ali, Lexi, Alex, Xandra and Sandy. However, it’s not a name that I would pick out of the jar because it’s too common and I don’t want six in my grade. It’s not a horrible name at all, all the Alexandras I met were awesome people, however, it just doesn’t suit all people the same.
I like my name but when I was little everyone started calling me Alex so no one calls me Alexandria anymore:( I love Alex but it's masculine and I would like to be called by my real name more.
That's my name and I hate it. I always have. It's long and brutal, extroverted, show off, and posh. We don't use many nicknames here, so it was Alex, which sucks because it's masculine. If I could I would change but it's close to impossible to. I have to bear it, literally. My friends and people close enough call me by another name that I won't share here. I tend to avoid going out, new people, new groups etc even more than my reserved/introverted nature just to not be called that terrible name.
Alexandra is classic, royal, aristocratic, ageless, evergreen, elegant and refined.Unfortunately it is also overused everywhere.Actually I think that Alexandra is better than Alessandra or Alejandra. At the contrary I much prefer Aleksandra, Alexandrina and Alexandria rather than it.My favourite nicknames for this name (and its forms) are:1 Alix*
2 Drina*
3 Alya (formally)
4 Sandy (formally)
5 Sasha (formally)
I LOVE the feminine form Alexandra as much as I HATE the masculine form Alexander. I don't know why.
Alexandra is one of my favorite girl names in the world. I love this name. In my opinion, Alexandra is a classy and beautiful girl’s name and I really do think that this is a strong girl’s name. Just like the names Elizabeth and Victoria, Alexandra is a strong noble feminine name. Parents shouldn’t expect their daughters to avoid being girly all the time just by giving them typical boy names. Girls can be strong and independent with feminine names too. Alexandra is a great name, and I love the nicknames Alex, Lexi and Sandra.
We were going to use the name Xandi Jayne if we had had another girl. Xandi/Xandy seems to be an unusual diminutive of Alexandra.
Alexandra is another one of my favorite girl names! So pretty and elegant! Alex and Alexy are cute nicknames. The girly girls of this name would typically be called Alexy and the tomboyish ones would typically be called Alex. But there’s a lot of good things about these names.
I like the name. But I prefer the Russian way to shorten it (Sasha) over all those Alex/Lexi/Allie/Sandy/etc. Sasha sounds more cute and special. It's so common in Russia! But in the West, people would find it confusing that Sasha can refer to both Alexandra and Alexander!
I like the name. But I prefer the Russian way to short it (Sasha) over all those Alex/Lexi/Allie/Sandy/etc. Sasha sounds more cute and special.
Alexandra is gorgeous, I may love Victoria and Elizabeth more but if I had a third kid in the future then her name would be Alexandra. So sophisticated and makes me think of an independent woman.
Alexandra is one of my aunt's names. She goes by Sandra. It's a strong name for a girl. I love the meaning: protector of mankind. It has an abundance of nicknames: Allie, Alex, Alexa, Lexi, Lexa, Sandy, Sandra, etc. It's not too common, either.
My name is Alexandra and I don't particularly like it, I get called Alex and Al by close friends and family, nothing else. In my opinion, it's a classy name, which I don't really like.
It's so annoying when subs call me Alexandra and everyone stares at me. Also, people wondering what an Alex (Alexandra) looks like, I'm average sized with dark brown hair, blue eyes and bright but pale skin.
(Of course I might change my opinion, since I'm still young, but I'm hoping to change my name to just Alex once I turn 18).
It's such a common name, isn't it? I mean, I am Turkish and I would guess it's most Turkish people's first known foreign name. But it's a beautiful name, it's like both a warrior and princess name. Really strong name I think.
My name is Alexandra, and I love it. Although, I can relate to people saying the name is too long. People automatically call me Alexa instead of Alex, which is just as annoying. For those who are guessing what an Alexandra looks like, maybe this can help you?: I'm pretty tall, have caramel skin, curly dark brown hair, and dark brown eyes.
I don't like this name at all, probably because I hate Alexander as well. It just sounds much too stuffy to me, especially as long as it is.
When I think of Alexandra I think of a green or brown eyed brown headed girl with a lot of soul and heart. I also love the name- it is one of my fave names.
I adore the name Alexandra – I would definitely use it if I ever have a daughter. Not for her middle name, though. One of the things I like about this name is that it is really long, has many cute nicknames, and somehow also manages to sound BEAUTIFUL! :) My favourite nickname for Alexandra is probably Lexi(e), but I like them all. I don't like Alexandria though. The 'ree-a' sound at the end is too harsh, and, although I usually like long names, the extra 'i' adds one too many syllables for my liking. If I were to name my daughter Alexand-something, I'd definitely choose Alexandra instead of Alexandria.
I like this name (classy in my opinion) but I think it's too long, so I think it's better to use it as a middle name.
I thought I was unique in liking the name Alexandra, but every other person here loves it as well. It's just a universally beloved name. And it's common in many languages, or at least variants of it.I first heard it on a girl my age in the mid-90s. I've loved that name ever since. But everyone else likes it. There was a spike in that name's popularity right around that time. Whenever we start liking a name, many other people start liking it as well, and they call their babies that. We're never as original as we think.I've rarely come across someone with the name Alexandra in my lifetime. I've always thought of it as a common-enough, but unique-enough name - just right.
I dislike this name. I tried to like it, I really did, but I just can't. One Alexandra I know is a stuck-up snob, and so she's ruined this name for me. It sounds too pretentious and haughty in modern usage.
My name is Alexandra, and I love it. It's not extremely common, but it isn't unheard of either, which is nice. The name as a whole has a very elegant feel to it, but I also like that it can be shortened to a wide variety of other, more casual versions, such as Alli, Alex, Lexi and Sandra. The only thing that annoys me is that usually when people first learn my name, they decide that it's too long for them to bother with, and automatically start calling me Alex. If they actually asked rather than assuming, they would learn that I go by Alli, not Alex. But that's a small price to pay for a beautiful name.
I love this name and am seriously considering it as an option for my future daughter. I do have some friends and acquaintances with the name and although we usually call them Ali, Lexi, Alex, or Sandra, I like to call them by their full name too! And love the meaning of this name and all the nicknames that can come from it.
My name is Alexandra and I like it a lot. A fairly common name in America, also a pretty common Russian name. However, most people will get it wrong and think your name is Alexandria. Personally I like Alexandra better, but be warned: name your baby this and you will have plenty of awards, notes, papers, etc. that say Alexandria on them!
This is my name and I love it. There's so many nicknames variations to choose from, personally I like being called Alex best. Everyone knows me as Alex, but it's nice to have a full name to go by too. Alexandra looks pretty and sounds lovely.
I love this name. I think it is strong. I imagine a girl with chocolate to black hair. Nicknames are:
Al, Alex, Ali, Alexa Alexi, Lex, Lexie, Sandra, Sandy, Xandra +variations of those and a few others like Xana and Alejandra.
This is probably my second or third favourite girl name. It is strong yet feminine without being frilly or over the top. The name has a good deal of diminutives, but I prefer Allie and Sandra to Lexi and Alex. The funny thing is that despite the name's high level of popularity, I actually don't know anyone with this name. I know two people with kre8yv spellings of this name and several people named Alexandria but no one just named Alexandra.
Personally I do like this name, but I have a friend at work his name is Alex too. Also my son has a friend called Alex, it sounds masculine to me and I would change it to Sandy or Sandra, which sound feminine too.
I think this is a beautiful name. I imagine someone with black or dark brown hair and brown eyes. I love the nickname Alex, many say it is too masculine, but I personally think it is lovely. Alexandra isn't too common, but not too unique either.
My name is Alexandra and I love how I can be called by its many different aspects. Personally, people call me Allie, but I like Alex a lot better. Many people picture us as blondes or gingers, but I disagree. I have chestnut brown hair and grey/green/blue eyes. (Haha, I'm a rebel).
My name is Alexandra and I really like it :). Being that I am in my mid-twenties, it always felt like a unique name growing up. I realize it has since become trendy, but growing up I was usually the only Alexandra. I go by Alex - not really by choice, but from a young age teachers would insist that I have a nickname, so I chose Alex as it seemed the most logical to me. I'll probably transition back to Alexandra in my professional life.It never bothered me that lots of guys had the same name as me - that made it seem even cooler and more unique for a girl :). However, I'm mad that this name has become so popular in recent years, lol. Even so, it's a classic and will never be considered ugly or out of style, In My Opinion.
Alexandra is the BEST name ever. It is not prissy or dark or boring, YOU'RE BORING! All of you Alexandra haters can back off! I am a blue eyed BLONDE but who cares what I look like, right? It doesn't define me as a person and neither does my name.
Alex is my nickname it is NOT masculine it's FABULOUS!
This is a lovely name! Ages well, stunning and many lovely nicknames. Lex, Lexi, Al, Ally/Allie, Alex, Xandra, Andi/Andy, Annie/Ann. Means defender of men. That's a winner!
Alexandra always struck me as a gorgeously beautiful name. It's the kind of classic name that's both pretty and durable. I can see it fitting all kinds of girls from a ballerina to a short-haired tomboy. In conclusion, Alexandra is a magnificent girls name.
Hi, my name is Alexandra. I don't know any Alexandra's except myself. But people don't call me Alexandr, they call me Alex, or they call me by my last name. Anyways, I think Alexandra is a beautiful name but I prefer to be called Alex! But my name suits me, Alexandra's meaning is defender of man kind! I love my name, and I hope everybody loves their name too!
My name is Alexandra and I love it. I use my nickname a lot (Alex) so people don't call me Alexandria or Alexander... I've only met one other person with the same name as me... It can be a name for anyone, it doesn't matter what nationality you are. You can be white with black or Blonde hair, you can be black, Hispanic, or even Asian... I have Dirty Blonde hair with Green Eyes (My eyes change from a green to a blue or grey color).
Nice name, but far too common these days. I would not name my daughter this unless you want to be 1/5 Alex's in each class.
Beautiful and very classy name.
I find it ironic that a woman's name would mean "a defender of men". :D.
I love this name! It sounds very elegant, I think it's a great name!
I know a girl that goes by Xandra. (pronounced Zan-druh)
Also, I like the nickname Zandy, or Zandra.
I commented on this post years ago, and just happened to be looking through it again, and I wanted to second what Alexandra Daniela said-- people *always* want to stick the 'i' in to make it Alexandria. Substitute teachers in high school were my enemy, for that reason. That or they assumed I went by "Alex" which I don't, and never respond to. I'm just not an Alex, and I strongly dislike people automatically calling me Alex.
Nevertheless, I (still) love my name. As for nicknames-- I am a nickname person, so, for example, my boyfriend calls me Lexie, my older brother and sister and some friends call me Lex or Lexa. I usually introduce myself as Alexa (which occasionally causes problems with people older than, say, 50. They seem to prefer "Alexia" or "Alexis"). Every now and then throughout school, mostly in college, there are an Alex/Alexandria/Allie or two in my classes, but not many 'Alexa's, so that's been nice. One of my favorite things about my name is being able to put "Alexandra" on resumes and whatnot. It's regal, powerful, and I think it gives me an edge that other names just don't have.
Hi, my name is Alexandra and I love my name. I'm Portuguese and there is a short Portuguese form for Alexandra: Xana. It sounds strange for people that aren't Portuguese but for me is perfect.
My friends also call me Lexi.
This is my name, and I have pretty much always liked it since it was bestowed upon me in 1987, haha. My parents said they chose it because they had both always loved it. They liked that it was classic, historic, and would sound professional and appropriate throughout my life. They liked the regal connotations of it, and they liked that it reflected my strong heritage. (My ethnicity is half German and half Greek.)A lot of people have been picturing what a person named Alexandra would look like... well, I am short/petite, with golden to medium brown hair, golden brown eyes, and tan/olive skin. I guess the Greek side gives me a somewhat exotic look, and I feel like my name fits that.It does have a variety of nicknames, if that's something that's important to you, though neither my parents nor I are really nickname people. They named me Alexandra because that's what they intended to call me. So I grew up being called that. I switched schools in middle school, and my new classmates kept complaining that my name was too long, and they started calling me Alex, which I never much liked, because that could be a masculine or gender-neutral name, and I wanted something more feminine. I tried to get them to use Lexy, but Alex is what stuck. Oh well... after I graduated high school and left behind that group of people, I reverted back to the full Alexandra. Even my current boyfriend, who knew me in high school, now calls me Alexandra (occasionally Lexy or Lex, affectionately).I've noticed that this name has stayed somewhat steady between #40 and #60 in the US for the past 25 years, and I'm often surprised at how high its popularity ranking is, because I haven't met that many other Alexandras. The mother of one of my preschool friends adored my name so much that she ended up using it for their youngest daughter, although she always ended up going by Alex. At my public elementary school, there was one other Alexandra, several grades behind me. I did always like that my name was somewhat unique, and that I was the only one in my class with it. I never had to tack on my last initial to differentiate myself, like Lauren H. and Lauren M. or something like that. One of the new students to join my grade in high school was named Alexandra, though she exclusively goes by Alex. I met another Alexandra at a summer camp program in high school, who actually uses her full name like I do. In college, I know there were a number of people that shared my name, but it's a school of 8,000 people, so it's bound to happen. I think there are a lot more of us than it sometimes seems, because many Alexandras use nicknames. For instance, I was one of three Alexandras in my sorority, but one went by Alex, and the other was Allie, so there was never any confusion. That's really about it, and I'm 24 years old now, so maybe I just got lucky that I haven't meet a lot of other people with my name yet, but I don't think that it's a name you hear every day. I feel like it's a name that's recognizable, but not overused. You meet an Alexandra every once in awhile, but it's not excessively common. Some things to watch out for are:
1) A LOT of people will try to shorten this name. Despite always introducing myself as Alexandra, new acquaintances often ask if I have a nickname, or sometimes just take the liberty of calling me Alex five minutes after meeting. 2) This name gets confused with Alexandria a lot. People seem to want to put the "i" in there. Also, less commonly, people will call me or write down my name as Alexander. But overall, I like my name, and recommend it to anyone looking for a name that straddles the line between classic and unique/uncommon..
Very classic girls name. I also like the nicknames Alexa and Lexi.
I used to love the name Alexandra so much I named my cat Alexandra. We call her Alex (it may not be original, but it's cool) and at least it's not Alexandria, which is okay I guess.
I like the name Alexandra. I do not think it is too long to use. I hate nicknames anyway. I think if parents wanted their kids to go by a shortened version, they should just give their kids that name instead. That being said, if I ever used the name Alexandra, I would insist on her being called by her real name and not a nickname.
I love the name Alexandra! It's so grand!
Very pretty name and it's also my middle name. I can see it used often as a middle name or shortened to a lot of names.
I love this name, it's quite grand sounding without being pretentious in the slightest. Very beautiful!I like the nicknames Alex and Allie, but I really really don't like Lexie for some odd reason.
I really like this name, it is classic and will never go out of style. And you can use many different nicknames.
I love my name! I find it sounds very regal, as I know many monarchs and nobles today and in the past have this name. I have so many nicknames too, like Aleki, Ali, Alex, Alexa, Alexi, Al, Alejandra and so on. :) I get ticked when people mispronounce it as Alexandria, but it's fine, as I can see where they can get confused. Also, my parents told me that it means "savior of the people", which always makes me feel special! :)
I agree that there are way too many nicknames. Alex, Lex, Lexa, Alexa, Andrie, Lexi, Andra, Andi, Xandra, Xan, Aly, Al.
THAT IS 12 NICKNAMES! Right off the top of my head. Plus this name is super common, I hear it almost everyday.
I think Alexandra has a certain grandeur to it but I think the name is too popular to be used. Even its variants are used too much (Alexander, Alexi, Lexi) and there are too many nicknames. No offense too anyone but I don't like nick names. I prefer being called by your given name.
I used to love this name, but now I don't. I mean it's gotten WAY too common, there is like a million Alexandras (every single one is now "Alex or Lexi").
I do like this name. It's quite pretty.
I really like the name Alexandra and some of the nicknames that can be derived from it. I agree that Alex is too masculine. My friend has her name shortened to Lexy and sometimes Alexy since she doesn't like the length of it. I much prefer the nickname Alexi. Some people say they see a blonde blue eyed girl, but I see more of a dark brown green or brown eyed girl.
I have a friend named Alexandra- she uses "Alex" as a nickname. Personally, I think the name is quite overused, as well as the nickname Alex. But, I do like the name Alexandra.
Ok, I changed my mind about the name "Alex" for a nickname for Alexandra. Alex is more for a boy NOT a girl. A great nickname for Alexandra is Alexa! NOT Alex.
My younger sister is named Alexandra, and she went by Alex until she was three, when she insisted on being Zandry. She isn't anything BUT a Zandry. We call her just Zan a lot. When she was a baby everybody kept thinking her name was Alexandria, with an I. Also, everybody tries to spell Zandry "Xandria". Oh well. I LOVE the name Alexandra, I wish Zandry would go by the longer version, it's absolutely GORGEOUS, who cares if it's long.
Someone close to me, she thinks of her name as regal.
My name is Alexandra, and when I was younger I didn't like it, but now I do. I just think it's a pretty name, and who cares if it's long? It has many options for nicknames, and most people call me Ally. Some of my friends call me Alexandra, and one calls me Xandra sometimes. I don't like to be called Alex, but some people do anyway. Also, I'm probably the only person with this nickname, but my closest friends call me RaRa (get it? AlexandRA).
I have to say, I love this name. It's so strong, and I love the meaning and mythology behind it. Alex is my favorite nickname, because it's so simple but expressive.
One of my favourite names, always been one of my favourites. My favourite spelling is Alexandra, but Alexzandra is nice too, or Aleczandra. I don't like the spellings Alecsandra or Alixandra.
I think it's okay, and I know a couple Alexandras. One goes by Alex another goes by Ally. Ally's parents sometimes call her Xandy (zandy) which I think is cute and unique, but not something to go by in the general public.
Alexandra is my first name and I've always thought it was a bit plain because I know so many other Alexandras. I always feel that it's proper to pronounce it Ah-lex-an-dra, but being from South Jersey I have trouble pronouncing things and say it Ah-le-zan-dra. I honestly have trouble pronouncing it the other way. Also, it makes me very angry when people say Alexandria because there is no 'i' in my name.
The name Alexandra used to be what I wanted to name my daughter. Then I would most likely shorten it to Alex. It is a beautiful name! There are all kinds of things a girl could go by if this was her name.
One of my best friends names is Alexandra, she goes by Alex. Now I would always think of her if I named my daughter this. So I will not do it.
I really like this name, because of all the nicknames you can garner from it. It gives the child herself some choice in what she wants to be called, which I feel is an important part of the naming process that people tend to forget.
Alexandra is nice with the nickname Sandy or Sandra.
One of my best friends' name is Alexandra. She goes by Alex, and that is much better for her! When a sub calls her Alexandra, people look at her and sort of chuckle! I hate how it's mis-pronounced as Alexander! I don't picture a blonde haired, blue eyed person with the name Alexandra.
The name Alex sounds very young, so a better nickname for a an old lady with this name would be Sandra.
I used to prefer to spell it Alexandria, but then I met a girl named Alexandra, and since she has become one of my best friends, I like to spell it the way she spells it now. A helpful thing about this name is that it has a lot of different pet forms (Alex, Andra, Zandra, Lexi, etc.)
Alexandra is my name. Here are a few things to think about.Reactions from others:
Throughout my life, many have said, "What a pretty name" when I introduce myself. However, several kids in elementary school thought it sounded prissy.Nicknames:
I ended up being called Alex for most of my life, and now and then I'd get "But that's a boy name!" from some rude fellow-child. I experimented with Allie, Lexi, Sandra, Sasha (the Russian nickname), etc. I eventually settled on Lex; it's short, modern, has a fair bit of attitude, and isn't as annoyingly cutesy as Lexi. Alexandra *does* have nicknames for most anyone.
I chose this name for my daughter in '04. I think it's a beautiful name! I lived up North at the time, and I had heard of a very few "Alexandra's," but since moving South I have hardly heard a peep of the name. I don't think it's all that common of a name; that is why I had chosen it to begin with! I wanted a unique name that wasn't un-heard of, but not odd, either. I think it's regal. Absolutely classy!
Snooty name. Snobbish New York liberals and similar types of people like to give their daughters this name.
I picture Alexandra as a Hispanic girl with gorgeous black hair and medium skin. If I have a daughter I might name her Alexandra. I like Alex as a nickname.
I'm not a big fan of Alexandra, it sounds a bit too pompous for a girl (like Elizabeth or Desdemona or Victoria). I knew one Alexandra, she was always quiet, some way angry and really grey person. The name sounded like caricature on this girl. Alexander is much more balanced in my option.
I'm an Alexandra but when I go to the doctors or the dentists the dumb receptionist can never seem to get it right. It's always Alexander or Alexandria! OMG please it's not that hard. It just plain Alexandra, come on it's a pretty common name and do I really look like a boy? Anyone else have this problem?
I adore this full name and the nickname Alexa. Alex sounds masculine and Alexis sounds feminie.
Nice name, although the most popular short name is Alex which is a guys name too, which is bad. Very BAD! But if you're Lexi, Allie, Lex, or another short form, that's okay.
P.S. How about Andy from the andra sound or Andra itself?
There are at least three Alexandras in my grade! I think this name is getting very common and maybe a bit overused! It is still a pretty name, though. I especially like the nicknames "Alex" and "Allie". Not a big fan of Lexie, though.
Alexandra is my real name I suppose but I refuse to answer to it! My name is Alex and everyone calls me Alex. Thing is a boy in my class who was called Alexander all through primary school has decided to take my name! I was always called Alex and he wasn't, it's unfair!
Well I'm called Alexandra and I have brown hair and blue eyes and people say the name suits me pretty well! Most people call me Alex, Alexa, Ally or Lexie. My mum calls me lexielou though as my first and middle names are Alexandra Sophie Louise. I like my name sometimes but others it's so annoying because it's so long. It also gets annoying with the fact that the two nicknames most people call me by: Alex and Ally sound masculine. Does anyone else have any other nickname ideas?
My name is Hope Alexandra. I don't know many other Alexandra's - Alexandria seems to be much more popular.
One of my good friends is Alexandra. I like this name, but whenever I hear it, I think of a snotty person. And if you call her anything BUT Alexandra, be prepared for a thunderstorm!
My name is Alexandra. It's so long so I don't use it and didn't learn how to write it till I was like 7. Whenever a sub calls me by Alexandra everyone looks at me and laughs. At least they don't know my middle name.
We named on of our twin daughters Alexandra (12 months old now). We pronounce it Al-ex-AHN-dra and call her Alex. It is a beautiful and classic name and we loved it because it was like Elizabeth in that it will remain timeless, and has so many nicknames.
Well my name is Alexandra and sometimes I wish I had another name but most of the time I love it. But can anyone think of a nickname besides Lex, Alex, Alexis, Alexa? It might be hard but if not, oh well.
A really pretty name, I have a really nice friend called Alexandra, and we call her Alex or Ali. AWESOME CHOICE!
Alexandra is a pretty name. I like the nicknames Alexis or Alexia the best. Alex sounds too masculine to me.
Alexandra is a beautiful name for a girl. I also picture dark hair and brown eyes with this name. Lots of great nicknames too.
It's the meaning "defender of mankind" that attracts me. The pronunciation is great, too!
One of my best friends is named Alexandra and her middle name is Kyra. I love her name, she finds it too long and everyone calls her Alex which suits her better. She has long blond hair and green eyes and that is what I think when I think of the name Alexandra. I also have many friends with the middle name Alexandra, including myself Chantal Lise Alexandra.
I'm planning on naming my daughter Pamela ALEXANDRA. I love the sound of it, especially in Spanish since I live in a Spanish speaking country. But anyway, this is one of my all time favourite girl names.
Alexandra is a very pretty, strong name. I don't think I would like the nickname Alex, too masculine. Alexis is a pretty name though.
This is a nice and elegant name, definitely one of my favorites. I think I might change my middle name to this.
My name is Alexandra Madeleine, I like the sound of it, the middle name is spelled the French way so it's pronounced Mad-el-len. I never imagined it for blonde hair though, I have reddish brown hair and green eyes, and I always thought that fit it.
I personally love my middle, but I like to be called Alex instead. My first name is Meagan by the way and I think Alexandra/Alex goes very nicely with it!
Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor is the queen's full name. Alexandra sounds nice with Elizabeth, but it's very long. As for Mary, this is a short simple name and very common for old ladies.
I like this name very much, I don't know many people who have my same name so it makes me unique. Many people call me Ali, or Alex for short.
My name is Alexandra, and I love how it can be shortened to so many things. People who I have known for a long time refuse to call me Alex, while other people don't know anyone named Alexandra because they know me as Alex. I don't mind either way. I like how I can be called Alexandra, Lexi, Alex, Alli, and a lot of other shorter versions of my name. Yes it's long, but I love it!
I have this name and I love it. The only thing I hate is that when I was born it was more like a "rule" to name your daughter like this. The consequences: I have 7 other colleagues in my class with this name.
I like the name Alexandra, also in the form of Alexandria. I think the combination name 'Victoria-Alexandra' is nice. It's is one of my favourite combination names. I like it to make combination names.
It's my name and it's the best! It's long (who cares), it's special and it's a princess name.
I love the name Alexandra. Well of course I do since it's my name. I've never met any other girls with that name. Plenty of Alexanders but no Alexandras so it makes me feel special.
My name is Alexandra, and I've never liked my name. It always struck me as being prissy and overly long. Just my humble opinion, though.
Alexandra is my name & I really love it. There are so many different nicknames that you can use. My friends just keep thinking up new ones, and there is so much history associated with it. People often think of an Alexandra with blonde hair and blue eyes, but I know many more brunettes! ;)
My name is Alexandra and I love it. There are so many other nicknames you can get from it! Everyone calls me Ali. But i have friends that are also named Alexandra and they are called Alex, Lexi, Alexa, the list goes on and on! I love my name!
My name ia Alexandra and I love my name because it just sounds cool. People think of blue-eyed and blonde-haired people when they see this name but I have short brown hair and brown eyes... Anyways I love my name.
I really like this name. I imagine a blond-haired, blue-eyed child.
A blue-eyed, fair-haired girl? Well, I'm usually not very fixed on the image of what the bearers of names look like, but I usually see an Alexandra as dark-haired (in the range from chocolate brown to raven black).
Nothing special... A typical Greek name! ;)
It is special first commenter!
