I like it, but I think I just know people who don't suit it.
I think an Alexandra is someone with fair skin, dark hair and light eyes.
My sister is named Alexandra, and since I'm a quarter Lebanese, my sister got the genes from the Arabic side and to be honest doesn't suit her name. She has darker skin, with dark hair, brown eyes.

I think Alexandra is by far one of the most beautiful names out there. Its full potential is underappreciated due to its tendency to get nicknamed.

This name makes me think of a fearless black haired woman. This is a great name. I love the masculine form Alexander too. Both are equally great names IMO.

When I think of the name Alexandra I think of a girl with long black or dark brown hair, fair skin, big blue eyes who overall is a pretty and ambitious smart young girl with a bright future ahead of her.

A beautiful, regal name, with strength and power. Alexandra stands tall and stands out in a crowd, she's fierce but loyal and has a good heart.

I've always loved Alexander, but I've only recently warmed to its feminine form. Maybe its because Aleksandra is ubiquitous in Poland, where I'm from, and nearly all women and girls named Aleksandra go by the lacklustre Ola. I think strong and regal Alexandra works best on its own - nicknames like Alex, Lexi, Alexa, or Xandra cheapen it.

The name definitely is regal and classy however I have found it to be too long most of the time, and its full beauty is hardly recognised in casual conversation. What is the point of having such an elegant and dignified name only for it to always be shortened to some chavvy childish nickname like Alex or Ali? The name itself almost forces you to sell yourself short. I would also be hesitant to use it because of the connection with Rasputin and the cursed Romanov family, as well as the Greek goddess Cassandra who was also cursed.

My middle name is Alexandra and I used to not like it but after reading all the positive comments I am now proud of being a Alexandra.

I'm an Alexandra! I was named for Salome Alexandra who was a Jewish Queen meaning I was very proud of it. I hate getting nick-named Alex since I'm very proud I'm a girl and don't like it when people call me something masculine. If you wanna go by Alex it's fine, I simply dislike it. For anyone considering choosing this name or who has this name, it's lovely. You can change it a lot as you've probably noticed and it's easy to pronounce. You may need to explain the spelling a lot. I always tell people to spell it Alex and ra.

I really like this name and I completely agree with the previous commenter that it is usable for many different personality types. Plus many nickname possibilities is a bonus. It's sophisticated and strong is the impression I always come away with. I'd totally give it consideration if not for the fact that I have an ex named Alexander but if not for this fact I think I would totally consider it. If you are considering it yourself I think it's a completely usable classic.

Alexandra is a very pretty name, in my opinion. “Suitable”, if you will, for many different types of personalities, such as girly-girls, tomboys, introverts, extroverts, athletes, artists, etc., it has an abundance of strong potential nicknames, and its meaning (“defender of humankind”) is incredibly empowering as well. I think Alexandra would make a good name for a defense attorney. Or anybody, really ;)

Alexandra, the full version, is objectively gorgeous. I'm totally confident in saying that. The problem is... well, nicknames. Alexander for boys (also handsome) is incredibly popular, and other than a handful bucking trends and going by "Xander" they're nearly all called "Alex." And since Alexandra is a four-syllable name, a nickname is inevitable - and it seems like most Alexandras go by "Alex" as well (though in these comments I've seen a few who go by Alexa).

So the dilemma becomes: how to avoid being just another Alex? If I were to use this name, I'd most likely push for the nickname Ally, like the actress Ally Sheedy (whose real name is Alexandra), and hope people wouldn't think my daughter's name was Allison. I thought about Xandra, but it just looks and sounds like it's trying too hard. I've never liked Lexi, it reeks "high school bully cheerleader from the 90s" to me. That's my name and I hate it. I always have. It's long and brutal, extroverted, show off, and posh. We don't use many nicknames here, so it was Alex, which sucks because it's masculine. The funny thing is that despite the name's high level of popularity, I actually don't know anyone with this name. I know two people with kre8yv spellings of this name and several people named Alexandria but no one just named Alexandra.

I commented on this post years ago, and just happened to be looking through it again, and I wanted to second what Alexandra Daniela said-- people *always* want to stick the 'i' in to make it Alexandria. Substitute teachers in high school were my enemy, for that reason. That or they assumed I went by "Alex" which I don't, and never respond to. I'm just not an Alex, and I strongly dislike people automatically calling me Alex.
Nevertheless, I (still) love my name. As for nicknames-- I am a nickname person, so, for example, my boyfriend calls me Lexie, my older brother and sister and some friends call me Lex or Lexa. I usually introduce myself as Alexa (which occasionally causes problems with people older than, say, 50. They seem to prefer "Alexia" or "Alexis"). Every now and then throughout school, mostly in college, there are an Alex/Alexandria/Allie or two in my classes, but not many 'Alexa's, so that's been nice.

It does have a variety of nicknames, if that's something that's important to you, though neither my parents nor I are really nickname people. They named me Alexandra because that's what they intended to call me. So I grew up being called that. I switched schools in middle school, and my new classmates kept complaining that my name was too long, and they started calling me Alex, which I never much liked, because that could be a masculine or gender-neutral name, and I wanted something more feminine. I've noticed that this name has stayed somewhat steady between #40 and #60 in the US for the past 25 years, and I'm often surprised at how high its popularity ranking is, because I haven't met that many other Alexandras. The mother of one of my preschool friends adored my name so much that she ended up using it for their youngest daughter, although she always ended up going by Alex. At my public elementary school, there was one other Alexandra, several grades behind me. I did always like that my name was somewhat unique, and that I was the only one in my class with it. For instance, I was one of three Alexandras in my sorority, but one went by Alex, and the other was Allie, so there was never any confusion. That's really about it, and I'm 24 years old now, so maybe I just got lucky that I haven't meet a lot of other people with my name yet, but I don't think that it's a name you hear every day. 1) A LOT of people will try to shorten this name. Despite always introducing myself as Alexandra, new acquaintances often ask if I have a nickname, or sometimes just take the liberty of calling me Alex five minutes after meeting.

THAT IS 12 NICKNAMES! Right off the top of my head. Plus this name is super common, I hear it almost everyday.

I think Alexandra has a certain grandeur to it but I think the name is too popular to be used. Even its variants are used too much (Alexander, Alexi, Lexi) and there are too many nicknames. No offense too anyone but I don't like nick names. I prefer being called by your given name.

My younger sister is named Alexandra, and she went by Alex until she was three, when she insisted on being Zandry. She isn't anything BUT a Zandry. We call her just Zan a lot. I ended up being called Alex for most of my life, and now and then I'd get "But that's a boy name!" from some rude fellow-child. I experimented with Allie, Lexi, Sandra, Sasha (the Russian nickname), etc. I eventually settled on Lex; it's short, modern, has a fair bit of attitude, and isn't as annoyingly cutesy as Lexi. Alexandra *does* have nicknames for most anyone.

I chose this name for my daughter in '04. I think it's a beautiful name! I lived up North at the time, and I had heard of a very few "Alexandra's," but since moving South I have hardly heard a peep of the name. I picture Alexandra as a Hispanic girl with gorgeous black hair and medium skin. If I have a daughter I might name her Alexandra. I like Alex as a nickname.

I'm not a big fan of Alexandra, it sounds a bit too pompous for a girl (like Elizabeth or Desdemona or Victoria). I knew one Alexandra, she was always quiet, some way angry and really grey person. The name sounded like caricature on this girl. Alexander is much more balanced in my option.

Nice name, although the most popular short name is Alex which is a guys name too, which is bad. Very BAD! But if you're Lexi, Allie, Lex, or another short form, that's okay.
