Alicia is a pretty name. I like both Alicia's "see-ah" pronunciation and "sha" pronunciation of the "cia" part. And I like Alyssa a lot too.
A bit dated.
Alicia is the name of my mother. To be honest, I never knew how to spell it as a kid and always spelt it Alisha. But, to be honest, it's a beautiful name.
Cute af. Prefer this to Alisha.
You’re very closed minded to think all Americans are the same. Don’t act like all other countries are better.
I like this name pronounced a-lee-sha. That’s the way I pronounce it. This spelling is much prettier than Alisha. Alyssia and Alissia are better spellings for the a-liss-ee-uh pronunciation. I’ve heard Alicia pronounced 3 ways, “a-leesh-uh, “a-liss-ee-uh, and a-lees-ee-uh.
My mother is named Alicia (we pronounce it Alisha) and I hold the name very close to my heart. I love it dearly.
Alicia is Spanish for Alice. The reason people in the comments wrote that they prefer the spelling Alisha or some other variant is because they cannot correctly pronounce it. Alisha sounds nice but it is not how this is pronounced and it can be its own name. If you're going to pronounce it Alisha at least spell it with a 'sh'. I'm not good at writing out pronunciations but the best I could do to break it down is Ah-Lee-Sea-ah, but said fast. I don't understand why Americans take names from other countries and make up their own pronunciations for it. If you can't pronounce it, it's not for you.
It's cute, but I prefer Alice.
I love this name, it's very pretty. Alice, Ally, and Al are nice nicknames for it.
It does look very pretty but the English pronunciation is very underwhelming.I prefer Alice or Alyssa.
It's nice, but I like the Alisha spelling more. :)
I'm Spanish, and the way we pronounce the name is Ah-lee-cee-ah. I think it's a beautiful name and it ages very well, although they will always remind me of Alice in Wonderland.
Dated!
This name is gorgeous! :)
Wonderful name.
"Ah-Lee-see-ah" is the best way to say it in my opinion. It sounds close to one of my favorite names, Lisa.
I like it said Uh-lee-shuh, which, in my opinion, is the "right" way to say it. It's truly a beautiful name.
It's a pretty name, but It's been ruined by the amount of parents who have decided to butcher it by pronouncing it as a-lee-sha. If you really wanted to mispronounce it so bad then you couldn't have just done Alisha or Aleesha?
I hated my name growing up (pronounced A lee sha). It’s okay now, but dated.
My name is Alicia (pronounced a-lee-sha). I never liked my name as a child because I was teased about the pronunciation, and those that did not know how to pronounce it called me by the many related names listed. As an adult I really like the name. Originally, I believe the name was taken from the Latin form of Alice. It is used in European countries such as Italy, Portugal, Germany, Sweden (same spelling), the Netherlands, and Ireland. So the comment that indicated that this pronunciation was wrong because the Spanish version is pronounced differently and that the English version was taken from the Spanish, was incorrect as it has been used in Europe as far back as the 12th century. I personally am German, Dutch and Irish.
This is very pretty! I don't really get why people dislike this name, it's great!
My name is Alicia. It's easy to see from these comments why I don't recommend my own name to expectant mothers. There are multiple pronunciations (I don't consider any one pronunciation "correct" except when people refer to me.) My mom called me uh-LEE-shuh, but I cannot tell you how many times I have heard every other guess in the book. I also get called pretty much any name that begins with an a. Even names that aren't close. As I've grown, I've just kind of learned to respond to everything. It can be frustrating, but it's no one's fault, it just comes with the name. So to a lot of people out there I am Alyssa, Allison, Adelaide, Alice, Ava, Olivia/Alivia, Amy, Addison, etc. The list goes on and on! I became really interested in researching names based on my personal dislike of my own name, so I definitely don't recommend using it. It's very confusing for everyone involved!
This is one of my favorite names. It sounds bright and happy, and I really like that. It was somewhat popular in the 80's and 90's. Anyway, I really like the American/English pronunciation of "Uh-leash-uh" other than the Spanish or whatever other pronunciation there is.
Alicia is a lovely name. Although I prefer the Ah-lee-see-a pronunciation over the Ah-lee-sha one.
Sounds lovely, but there’s not much in it. I still think it’s quite nice, though.
Don't like this name. Too basic. The spelling Alisha would be much better.
My name is Alicia, pronounced "Al-lee-sha" it is pronounced wrong about 60% of the time, and I got called "Ashley" a lot as a kid. I have been going by the name Allie since my second year of college because I feel it fits me better. I'm not that much of a girly girl at all, and the name Alicia sounds very feminine to me, but I don't mind the name on other people, it is just not a good fit for me, and my friends say they think Allie suits me much better than Alicia.
This is my name and I personally don't like it. I pronounce my name ah-lee-sh-ah, though a lot of people call me ah-lee-see-ah including my Spanish teacher. It is often also misspelled as my name is not pronounced the way it looks. I really would not name your child it.
Not a big fan of it being pronounced "Aleesha," more on the count of not hearing "a-lee-sya" very often.
The name seems pretty popular in Sweden, too. I've seen quite a few Alicias, and they were all pretty young.
I like the name Alicia. I somewhat prefer Alice since it’s more classic but Alicia is fine. Granted, I would usually pronounce it Ah-lee-sha, since that’s more common to me. I would really only pronounce it Ah-lee-sya if you were of Hispanic descent, otherwise it comes up as pretentious to me. It’s a pretty name and I like Alicia Keys who is a good singer.
My name is Alicia. My name was chosen by the black nurse attending my mother at Lincoln Hospital, NYC, back in 1954. My mother had another name for me. I am glad she followed the recommendation of the nurse. I love my name - which means truthful and noble. I am proud of that. This sums up who 'I am - Alicia'.
Your first name of Alicia has given you an expressive, diplomatic, and refined nature.

Although you have a good appreciation of material values, business ability, and skill in organizing and managing others, your success is restricted by a lack of self-confidence and initiative.

You have very expensive tastes, and your desires could well exceed your initiative in providing for them through your own efforts.

Personal appearance is important to you.

You are always well-groomed yourself, and you judge others by your own standard.

You do not like to rough it or use much physical energy.

Through your diplomatic ways you are able to call on the assistance of others to avoid such matters.

You have good business judgment but lack the confidence to carry out your own ideas unless assisted by an associate.
Nice enough name though I personally would never use it- at least not for any of my children. I just prefer other names over it. If I did use it, I would use this spelling. I prefer the spelling of Alicia over Alisha. Alisha looks a bit cheap.
My name is Alicia and I like my name. It's not overly common for a 39 year old. It is pronounced a-LEESH-a, but when I was in Norway they pronounced it a-LISS-ia and I answered to it rather then correcting them all the time. I didn't mind. Only a few people have shortened my name. I had an English teacher call me "Allie" because we had two Alicia's in the class, and I have had a few friends call me "Al". Al is most common among my male cowboy friends.
I actually got to choose my name because I was adopted, and I was pulled between this name and another, but I feel in love with this name because, for me, it was just perfect and I just knew I could see myself with this name for the rest of my life :)
My name is Alicia although I am called Aili. My name is pronounced a-LEE-sha and I get called every other similar name in the book before I finally have to remind people that it's Alicia. Others with this name probably get called these too: Alice, Allison, Alyssa, Alexa, Alexis, Lisa, and several other names. My driver's ed teacher called me Allison the entire time I was in class no matter how many times I corrected him. I usually advise people against using this name just because there are so many spelling and pronunciation issues with it.
This is one of my favorite names of all time, pronounced a-LEESH-a. I don't even know why, it's just so pretty!
I like it and think it has a pleasant, pretty sound. It could also make a nice middle name.
Something about this name always sounds trashy/unsophisticated to me. Maybe I have just had bad associations with it in the past.
I will always hate this name because my awful college roommate was named Alicia. Just goes to show that one bad experience with someone can turn you off of their name forever.
This is a pretty name. In the Spanish world it's somewhat like a classic but doesn't sound old like other Spanish names. Alicia will always sound youthful, elegant and sounds great on both a little girl and a grown woman. What I like about it is that the name is used all over Europe, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, South America, but not very popular in any one country (much less the U.S.) so that makes it even better, how universal it is without it being overused.
I think the name Alicia is stunning, classy and beautiful. The English pronunciation "ə-LIS-ee-ə" sounds the best in my opinion. (I myself automatically pronounce the name Alicia as "ə-LIS-ee-ə". I automatically use the "ə-LEE-shə" when the spelling is "Alisha"). I admit, I do like the classic name Alice better (I adore the name Alice so much!) but the name Alicia is honestly beautiful as well. :)
Pretty name, but reminds me a bit of alopecia.
I think the name Alicia is pretty. It's a great alternative to the ever popular Alyssa. I know they're two entirely different names but they sound very similar. I think universally, the name Alicia does very well in most languages and in most countries compared to Alyssa. I'm hispanic so we pronounce it A-LEE-SEE-YA. You'd pronounce it A-LEE-THEA if you spoke Spanish with the Castillian lisp (accent from Spain). Otherwise, most of the Spanish speaking world says this name A-LEE-SEE-YA. It's a very pretty name that deserves a comeback.
My name is Alicia, but pronounced the Spanish way A-LEE-thea. I have yet to meet anyone with it pronounced this way in England, and I really like the fact that it is unusual. I also think it sounds prettier than A-LEE-sia. However, it is annoying having to correct everyone when they say it for the first time haha!
In general, Alicia is not a name that I like. It appears usual, predictable, default, standard... I suppose I have heard so many by this name that I have become desensitized to it; it now sounds monotonous. Growing up, I always heard it pronounced Uh-LEE-Shuh. I have encountered it once, however, where my impression was different... Alicia actually seemed to mesh incredibly well with the bearer, and it sounded wonderful to me (pronunciation: ah-LEE-see-ah / ah-LEE-syah). It is a sweet name, ultimately, but not my style. If I had to choose a preferred pronunciation, it would be the latter of the two I posted.I'm not sure if this is the same opinion everywhere, but I have heard of Alicia occasionally being considered an "unspoken" "white trash" name. I do not personally agree. It is just a name, and a rather reasonable one at that.
I prefer the pronunciation: a-LEE-sya.
This is a nice name! In my opinion, "a-lis-ee-a" is the most elegant pronunciation.
My name is Alicia - 'Aleesha' highschool was not fun as I constantly had to correct teachers etc on pronunciation, wouldnt name my child this but everyone has said it's a really pretty name.
I grew up hearing the "ə-LISH-ə" pronunciation, which means that, to me, it's the "correct" pronunciation. However, that doesn't mean that I like it. I keep on hearing the middle "i" as a short English "i" sound (the one you find in the word "if"). As such, the vowels are too short and too dark for me, and they ruin the name for me. There's also the phonetic association to the word "malicious" that I cannot help but make.As for imagining that the "i" sound(s) might be long (like in the "ee" sound, as in "meet" or "sheep" or "teeth")... I can't do it without it sounding weird to me in the process. Alicia_84 mentioned an alternate spelling, "Alyssia", that actually looks nicer to me.But if I can't stand a certain pronunciation, it has to be "ə-LIS-I-yə". No offence to all the Alicias, be you in this thread (sorry, Alicia_84 and others) or out there, who pronounce it like that, but I simply can't shake the phonetic associations to the words "prissy" and "sissy".Also, speaking purely of impressions, if I do use the name on a story character, she will likely have an inflated sense of entitlement and act accordingly. Honestly, that really is the impression that I get. It doesn't help that one of the (ultimate) roots of the name means "noble".To conclude: I do not recommend this name at all. If you wish to use it because the meaning is beautiful or because it sounds beautiful to you (well, okay, even if I don't see how), go ahead by all means, but I don't truly think you're blessing your little girl; you might probably want to go with classic, short, sweet "Alice" instead. Nonetheless, there are far worse names than this, and that (as well as the number of pro-"Alicia" commenters here) is why I have been insisting throughout this comment that the views expressed herein are my own -- truly trashy names do not get this treatment.
I only like it pronounced ah-LEE-see-ah and I think the nickname Lecie (LEE-see) is cute.
Alicia is a trendy name but without being tacky. I like the pronunciation 'Ah li - see - ah' it sounds prettiest that way.
I think it sounds lovely, regardless of how it's pronounced.
I don't think it really matters how the name is pronounced, it still means the same thing - to me that's all that matters and this name has a lot of different beautiful meanings. I have this name and I wouldn't change it if I got the chance. It has rhythm and uniqueness and it originates from a great country.
I'm fed up with this name, as it's so common and overused. If you forget about the fact that this is a common name on many middle class and high class white women and just focus on the sound that comes in the common pronunciation of this name, you can hear a familiar little sound: ''EESHA''. That's right, the common pronunciation of this name sounds quite ghetto indeed. ''uh-LEE-see-uh'', on the other hand, strikes me as pretentious, but it does sound better. Now, this name has been the name of many perfectly sensible people like Alicia Witt (even though she starred in some silly urban legend movie) and Alicia Keys, whose music may be horrible, but who is admittedly quite smart. Unfortunately, this reminds me of some Catholic blogger. Alicia Silverstone doesn't strike me as very bright either, sorry.
My name is Alicia and I pronounce it a-lee-sha. I think it is really pretty spelled that way and it really depends on the person whether it should be pronounced one way or the other. Many people think my name is very suitable for me.
My name is Alicia, pronounced "A-LEE-sha". I think all the pronunciations of the name are beautiful (except "A-LISH-a" or any with that dull "ih" sound in the middle). But I do think the pronunciation I use is an appropriate evolution of the sounds (look at the Japanese "sha", for example, it comes from a fusion of "shi" and "ya").The worst thing is when people try to say there's ONLY one correct pronunciation of my name -- they like to tell me I say it wrong! You could pronounce a name in a completely bizarre manner and people still shouldn't be able to tell you it's "wrong" -- it's your name.
My cousin is called Alicia and we pronounce it A-LISS-ia or shortened to Lissi. I don't like the name that much but I prefer it pronounced A-LISS-ia than A-LEESH-a as it's not spelt that way and I think A-LISS-ia is cuter. But that's just my opinion. :)
I pronounce it a-Lee-sha. I like this spelling as it is very pretty but I do know of a girl who started spelling her name Alisha so people would pronounce her name properly.
The name Alicia is very pretty, especially pronounced as ah-LEE-shah!
I think it's very tiring to keep saying "A-LEE-cia" or "A-liss-EE-ah", so that would be a reason I don't like those names. And it just doesn't sound right, except in Spanish, but again it's very tiring. If you like it pronounced "A-LEESH-ah" then I recommend spelling it "Alysha". That's the spelling of my little sister's name, and it's cute, unique, and fit for a spunky girl. "Alicia" is just annoying. I'd actually prefer "Alice" over "Alicia", and Alice is a rather ugly name too.
My name is Alicia but it's very complex the way it is spelled. My name is Alicia spelled Alissah (a-LEE-sha) and it seems like we Alicia's always have trouble with people always mispronouncing our name and having to correct them. And we're very good at it *laughs* but I think this is a very beautiful name indeed. Not that I like to brag.
My favourite pronunciations of this name are a-LEE-see-a and a-LISS-ee-a.
I prefer a-LEE-sha as a pronunciation. I have known more people who pronounce it this way. I have known one person who pronounces her name a-LISH-a. a-LISS-ee-a or a-LEE-see-a would be okay for someone from a family that does not have English as their primary language, but otherwise it's super-pretentious.
I don't care how you pronounce it - this is a beautiful name. (Except for a-LISH-a.)
I have the name Alicia (I have 2 names actually. I am called Aisha equally as often). I pronounce my name a-LEE-sha. I like it that way too.
I'd like to know of someone with the name Alicia or Alisha who pronounces it a-LISH-a. It just doesn't seem like the right way to say it to me.
I fell in love with a girl named Alicia and she was always very paricular in making sure people pronounced it "ah-LISS-ee-ah".
I don't think Alicia is a really bad name and in fact it is kind of catchy. But as time goes by it is becoming more and more popular and I like the unique names the best!
Alicia is a unique and beautiful name. To me it sounds like a name for a person who strives to be perfect but is always ready to make mistakes (in a perfectly good way).
Alicia is a really pretty name.
My name is Alicia (A-liss-E-uh) and my whole life I have had to constantly correct people who call me Alisha (notice the different spelling). This can get very frustrating at times. However, when pronounced properly (the French way), this is an absolutely beautiful name and who wouldn't want a daughter whose name means 'noble' and 'truthful'.The alternate spelling of Alyssia is great for pronunciation but isn't as elegant on the page.
I like it pronounced A-lee-sha. It sounds pretty.
