América del Pilar Rodrigo was an Argentinian botanist and explorer. Born in the early 20th century, she received a doctorate in botany from the National University of La Plata, and notably worked to classify genera of the family Malvaceae and other spermatophytes.
I think América is a gorgeous name. It’s a very beloved name in my family, as it was my grandmother’s youngest sister name. She was named América for being born on October 12th, in which Día de la Raza is commemorated in Latin American countries (and Columbus Day in the US).
I think it’s a beautiful, strong and meaningful name. While I love the Spanish pronunciation, I’m not too fond of the English one.
In Brazilian Portuguese the emphasis is different: ah-MEH-ree-kah. I like this better, but the Spanish is still nicer than the English prn. It's a lovely name, but maybe not so much for English speakers. Which is sadly why I would never use personally. America Ferrera carries it beautifully, though, in any pronunciation :)
Club América is a popular Mexican soccer team (and also really hated) which has crazy fans. Most girls in Mexico named América are named by their fathers in honor of the soccer team. I don't blame them because if "Chivas" were a name I would also name my daughter that in honor of the best Mexican soccer team in the world!
