Meaning & History

The first element of this name is derived from Greek ἀμφί (amphi) meaning "on both sides, in all directions, surrounding" as well as "around, about, near". The second element is derived from the Greek verb ἀράομαι (araomai) meaning "to pray to", which is related to the Greek noun ἀρά (ara) meaning "prayer". This noun is sometimes used in the context of evil, which then essentially gives it the meaning of "prayer for evil, curse". As a result, some people associate this noun with a Greek word that is similar in outward appearance and meaning, namely αρη (are) "bane, ruin". This word is said to be etymologically related to the name of the Greek god Ares. Because of all of this, some people believe that the second element of the name Amphiaraos refers to either a curse or the god Ares, causing them to interpret the name's meaning as either "doubly cursed" or "twice Ares-like".
