Angel tends to be used by Hispanics and is traditionally a masculine name. It would not be considered for a girl, a girl would go by Angela. I can see why in English it can be gender neutral though.
The name is unisex.
Angel is also Polish. The name days for Angel in Poland are February 6, August 27, and October 30.
In Poland, the classic and linguistically correct form of Angel (feminine) would be Aniela, and it's been used for ages, these days has a bit of a vintage feel but is climbing up the charts. Andżelika/Angelika (sometimes even Angelica though this one is considered a not phonetically correct spelling in Polish), Andżela/Angela, and occasionally Andżelina/Angelina are also used. However, last year (2019) 4 girls were given the name Angel as a middle name, and the name was #364 in the girls' middle names' ranking. There were no girls with Angel as a first name recorded.
As for boys, the standard, albeit super rare these days, form of this name in Polish for men is Anioł, which is just a literal translation of the word Angel. As far as I know it was mostly used in middle ages, and as I said is super rare these days, mostly used in Catholic religious orders. Angelo has also been used occasionally despite not being phonetically correct. In 2018, two male Angels were born in Poland, and the name was #577 in the boys' ranking.
In July 2017, there were 179 Angels (I'd think of either gender as there's no division) in the whole Polish population.
Angel could celebrate her/his name day in Poland either with Angelika (4th January) or Angela (27th January), or Aniela (4th January, 28th March, 30th May, 31th May or 18th November), or perhaps on the Guardian Angels' feast (2nd October).
I know two Angels (their first name being Angelus), and they are both boys.
In 2018, 8 is the most common age for an American (U.S.) Angel who is registered female with the Social Security Administration. It is the 570th most common female first name for living U.S. citizens. In 2018, 4 is the most common age for an American (U.S.) Angel who is registered male with the Social Security Administration. It is the 320th most common male first name for living U.S. citizens.
The name Angel is more popular than any name especially the name Kevin.
A common name used amongst Hispanics.
This seems to have been a long running debate - I would just like to say that here in England Angel is not a very common name - but it is a girl's name. I think it unlikely that someone would name a boy this as it is very girlie, however we are aware that in the USA it is a boys name - although we find it far to feminine for a boy.
Angel is also the Russian form of Angelus. In Russia, it is spelled the same as it is in Bulgaria and Macedonia, namely: Ангел.
Angel was traditionally used as a masculine name. According to the encyclopedia, "The word "Angel" in English, French, German, Spanish, and many other European languages is derived from the Greek άγγελος, a masculine noun." I find it interesting that some people say that they feel sorry for boys named Angel. They think the name is too feminine. Actually, angels were never females. Angels were not depicted as females until much later in our history. Angels in the Bible are all male. For example: the archangels Michael and Gabriel. And angels in the Bible are given tasks such as warrior, herald, guard (at the gates of Eden), wrestler (of Jacob), mover of large stones (at the tomb of Christ), which in traditional societies would all have been tasks typically performed by men. Also, I think it's quite amusing that some people believe that all angels were good. I saw such comments as, "I know a girl named Angel and she is far from an Angel." Well. Not all angels in the Bible were good. Take Lucifer for example. He was an Angel that fell from Heaven. And I don't think anyone would depict him as good!
Is also a Spanish name for boys.
Also a masculine name in Slovenia.
I was surprised to see here that this name is used for girls. I've never met a girl named Angel but I know many boys by that name! I just thought the girls form was Angela. [noted -ed]
In Spanish the name is masculine, the female version being Angeles (phonetic emphasis on the 'A') quite often along with Maria, ie: 'Maria De Los Angeles' or '(Virgin) Mary of Angels'. Variation: Angelines or Angelita (feminine).
I believe this name is also used in Spanish speaking countries, typically for males. Pronounced Ann-Hell.
The name Angel is starting to be very popular in South Africa, specifically female gender. It would really be nice to see popularity stats of names in Africa.
