Meaning & History

Allegedly means "man with something to cut" (compare Inuktitut ᐊᖑᑦ (angut) meaning "man"). In Inuit mythology this is the name of a god, sometimes considered a psychopomp responsible for conveying the souls of the dead to the underworld, Adlivun, where they must sleep for a year. In certain myths he is considered the creator deity and supreme being. The meaning of his name is said to refer to his mutilation of his daughter Sedna, an act which ultimately resulted in her becoming the goddess of the sea.
