User comments for Antipater (Meaning / History Only)

"Anti" basically means "in front of" or "instead of". So, it can also mean, by derivation, "against" or "like", "equal to". Of course, in a name like "Antipater", the meaning of "anti" is "equal to".

Antipater is rather the Latinized form of Antipatros than the Anglicized form. [noted -ed]

Should this be "against the father" rather than "like the father" due to "anti" {against}? Because, in the name Antigone, "anti" is sourced as meaning "against" whereas here it is "like".
