It comes from a legend, where a shepherd who was looking for a stray sheep found a figure of the Virgin Mary amongst some thorned bushes. Surprised, he exclaimed "Arantzan zu?" -'You, amongst the thorns?'-
It is a short form of the Basque name "Arantzazu". Anyway, the meaning remains the same. It makes reference to the Virgin of the bush. [noted -ed]
