Derived from Gothic Athnareiks, combining the declined form of athn "year", and reiks "power, ruler". Aside from the latinized names Athanaricus and Athanaildus (Athnagild), athn occurs in the dative form in the compound at-athni "this year". It's only known cognate is Latin annus "year" (primitive atnos) and in all other uses Gothic uses the standard Germanic "year", in Gothic jer/yer. [noted -ed]
