Did people not read the bit about its meaning and history? The name Atlas has nothing to do with maps. I suppose some people just don't know anything about Greek mythology. Atlas is a good name, and if you're too ignorant to see that, that's a you problem.
Wow, I didn't know Atlas had this much hate. But, in my humble opinion, a truly good name possesses both love and skepticism. Atlas means 'endurance', not 'roadmap'. I'm thinking about using it for my second child, regardless of whether it is a boy or a girl.
I can't say that I'm an admirer of this name as it does sound rather silly to me. Sure, it might make a decent pet or character's name of a certain genre but not so much for an actual person, at least in my opinion.
I’ll have to be honest here; I used to find this name ridiculous. I mainly didn’t like it because it’s like an Atlas, maps. Now, I find it very cool. I like it on almost anyone. I know I’ll probably be downvoted, but I find it unisex.
My nephew's name is Atlas but I like the name but who would name their kid after maps? That's weird?
Hey there, my name is Atlas! I think people are overreacting and are kind of ignorant about the name. When people hear my name, since most of them are up to date in the 21st century, they don't immediately think of the book of maps (an Atlas). When I was in school, an Atlas never even came up in class. I first found out what one was when I visited my grandparents!Genuinely, people need to chill out when it comes to being so overcritical about names. My experience with my name obviously isn't universal, but there's no need to say such mean and hateful things about it. If you want to be real here, at least I'm unique and don't get lost in the void with Tyler, Lauren, Jessica, David, and so many more repetitions. My name is great and I would recommend it for any parent for their child. Pets are also cool, just don't limit yourself to it just as a pet name. For me, most people are in awe and in love with it and then reference Greek mythology. And not in a bad way like you people seem to think! Everyday people consider it cool to be named after the titan that held up the heavens/sky. Come on guys, get over yourselves and be nice!
Really ridiculous in my opinion.
What... so you want your kid to be named after maps? Ridiculous.
A book of maps comes to mind.
It is a very rare name, if you are looking for one, but to me it fits a dog better. Still love it though.
This name is so horrible.
It just makes me think of the atrocious Ayn Rand. I know it has different origins, but I just can't shake the connection to her.
I had a sister named Atlas, her full name was Alexandrina. I think it's a great name for tough young girls and shouldn't be used just for boys only.
Naming our son Atlas, his due date is 11/16/18... like most comments here, it does resonate a very strong and worldly vibe! It sounds very masculine and sounds like someone who can endure all the trials of one's life with all his might. He was the leader of all Titans to DEFY the gods themselves... I know my son will lead a brave and courageous life! Thank you everyone for your comments, it's quite reassuring!
Yes, Atlas may evoke some negative connotations. But, Atlas from Greek Myths was punished for his wrongdoing and can serve as an example to your son.
I think that Atlas is a lovely name! Cute for a child and so fascinating for a boy/man.I can see it on a very active child who will become a very strong character and smiling man.
I adore the strong, masculine feel to the name. But I can imagine Geography lessons in school!
I refuse to believe this is an actual name.
I love this name. It evokes strength, wisdom, and worldliness and has a deep history behind it and its meaning is quite contradictory to the Greek myth. This is at the top of my boy's list, and I will be using this for a future son one day. I love the mythological story behind the name, and the fact that Atlas is associated with globes and maps shouldn't deter one from using this name. I should also note that it is growing in popularity. It is about time that this name receives some recognition and appreciation.
This is a very strong and masculine name, and I admire anyone brave enough to use it.
I like the name and the connotation (though, not so much the denotation).
