This name is also used in Germany, where it is strictly feminine. It's a (actually more common) variant of Augusta.

Auguste is very old-fashioned and not given anymore. It reminds of Philippe-Auguste or of the clown Auguste. So it's either pompous or slightly ridiculous.

Luxsword's information is incorrect. Auguste is still used, and it's actually rising in popularity in France. I know a few young Augustes.
