Barry is the name of a homicidal maniac who dresses up as a woman to trick his victims in the anime/manga "Fullmetal Alchemist". His character was amazing and he brought up several important issues, even though he only appeared once or twice throughout the entire show. His appearance lead to Alphonse questioning his own existance, and Edward realizing that he was only human.
I live near a town called Barry in South Wales, and I guess that puts me off. Barry is kind of a rough area, but not really, and people make jokes about it a lot. It's not too bad, like I said, it's mostly the jokes. I don't see why this should bother anyone who's never been there though, it's not like calling your child "crack den" or anything.
A famous bearer is American actor Barry Bostwick (born on February 24, 1945). He is best known for his roles as Brad Majors in the 1975 cult film "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", his Tony Award-winning role in the Broadway musical "The Robber Bridegroom", and the mayor on the TV series "Spin City".
The name makes me think of some beer-bellied, balding guy. It also makes me think of Barry White. Two very different associations. I have a third one: it reminds me of the homoerotic song Barry by Gus Gus, or gusgus, whatever it officially is.
Barry Lyndon was the title character of a William Makepeace Thackeray novel and the Stanley Kubrick film version. Barry was actually originally the characters surname, but he marries the Countess of Lyndon and adopts that name.
Possibly derived from either of two Irish words, one meaning "spear" and the other meaning "fair-haired" (ie. blond).
Rarely used as a diminutive of the name Bartholomew; and I suspect that would be because of Barry Allen, the most well-known of the DC Comics heroes to take the codename of the Flash (who does indeed have the former as a proper first name, though it's almost never noted).
