The name derives from ancient Cana of Galilee in Israel. It can also be a Jewish name.
My history professor brought up the idea that the apostle Bartholomew was so called to identify him as a Hellenized Egyptian; bar Ptolemaios, (son) of Ptolemy, the Egyptian dynasty began by the general Ptolemy after Alexander the Great.
Bartholomaios is an ancient greek name which comes from the Aramaic word 'bar', which means 'son' and from the Greek name 'Ptolemaios, altered to somewhat 'Tolemeos'. PS. Ptolemaios is a Greek name which means the one who is related to 'p(t)olis' (=city). Moreover, it can mean the one who fights for cities, or makes war. 'War' in ancient Greek is 'p(t)olemos'. In modern Greek is 'polemos'. In either case, you can see that wars were about (capturing) cities.
It is derived from the Aramaic 'bar', meaning "son of" and 'Tholomaios' (Talmai), a personal name.
