Bede is a very unique and beautiful name. Its main bearer St. Bede of Jarrow is so important to English history. It amazes me that this name is hardly ever used.

Agreed! Such a vital and important historical figure. The name is short, simple and easy to pronounce. I can't think of a better namesake than St Bede.

In Danish it means "praying".

In Sweden, Bede is called Beda. But the name is only used for women (and very rare nowadays). I know this from Swedish name books but is is also stated here: http://www.nordicnames.de/wiki/Beda
