I’m torn on how I feel about this name. I've got an adorable grandmother named Beverly, & we maintain a friendly college football rivalry (she likes the Oregon Ducks & I like the Utah Utes). However, the fact that “beaver” is an unfortunate nickname for a woman’s … private area … makes the definition of “beaver stream” sound inappropriate to me. I won’t give someone grief for having the name, but I don’t plan on giving the name to any daughters I may have.

Lots of comments saying this is an “old lady” name. Who cares? All old lady names used to be young lady names, and all the young lady names of today will be old lady names in the future. (And who says having an old lady name is a bad thing anyway?)

Well, I have nothing against Beverly. It's funny, because I always believed that Beverly was a very 80s and 90s name, but now I see that no, that it is much more old-fashioned than I thought. Personally, I find Beverly a youthful and rich girl name, but I may be wrong. I wouldn't give it to my daughter, but it's not an ugly name. Better than Ava, Mia, Kaycee, Josie or something like this. I really like the name Beverly! To me, it is the kind of pretty, unique, old-fashioned name. It used to be common in the forties I believe, but has been out of style ever since the sixties or so. However, I will not be naming my future-child Beverly, but the name still remains beautiful to me. I prefer this spelling of Beverly rather than Beverley. An issue I have with the name is the diminutive "Bev", which I’m not crazy about. The comments about how the name sounds like a beaver are foolish and immature! Grow up already... one of the main reasons I like this name is because one of the protagonists from my favorite novel is called Beverly Marsh. As you can maybe guess, the novel is IT by Stephen King. Overall, Beverly is an oldie but goodie. Many think it hasn’t aged well, and I don’t completely disagree, yet in my opinion, it has aged properly and still remains a damn nice one. Some nicknames for Beverly: Bev, Bevvie, Lee, etc... I’d personally go by Lee, if my name were Beverly. Thanks for reading :)

My name is Beverley and I live in the UK. I'm aged 53 and one of 5 daughters- I am the eldest! As my parents had more and more daughters their girl names became more and more feminine! I dislike my name it sounds old and dated! I don't hear of many but when I do the name always belongs to an older person or of African/West Indies origin. My sisters don't like my name and all call me Bev. Oh well, I guess it could be worse- apparently I was going to be Michelle but my dad came up with Beverley! I feel better about it now that I am older, it sits better I guess. One thing's for sure I would never use it for any daughter of mine which is probably why I got 3 sons!

Look up the word, Beverly, in any dictionary and it will say "dweller at the beaver meadow." Why is this important? A beaver meadow is the most fertile soil! The name Beverly means prosperity; dweller at the most fertile soil! Why do you suppose they named the most famous rich neighborhood in America, Beverly Hills? Beaver meadows were hunted during the land rush of the 1800's because they meant prosperity to the land owner!

This is my mother's name. My grandma says she picked it because it was popular in 1959 and it started with a "B" like her sibling's names (Bradford and Barbara). Someone here said they never met a Beverly that wasn't slow... I beg to differ. My name is Beverly and I have a higher IQ and a degree from a four year University.
I have known at least 7 Beverlys and I can say none are on the slow side.

I love to research names. In my library there is a book about two feet thick that traces the history of names. Apparently first used for a surname between the 1200-1600s, it was spelled Beaver or Bever then a dash, then Leigh. Since LEA means meadow... Beaver meadow. It was also used commonly as a male given name... ever heard of George Beverley Shea? A great pianist.

People with the name Beverly seem to have a problem with being called beaver. Well, maybe they should study beavers for a while. They are second only to humans in creative engineering, and they are extremely clean and hard-working.

Of all the possible names I have no idea why I got Beverly - Don't like it, never have. All of the "Beverlys" I've known have been at least 30 years my senior. 90% are Beverly Ann, like me. I just wish it were more contemporary and pretty.

This is also my name. I was named after my grandma. My name's a little on the blah side, lol. But I like it because it's original and you know it could mean something a little better than a beaver but it makes sense I guess, lol.

From my understanding, the meaning of the name comes from "Beaver Meadow" not just Beaver, if that helps.

This is my name and I wish my mother had looked up the orginal meaning. My little sister (Heather) calls me "Beaver". In today's world that is NOT a good nickname. I do like it though. It is quite rare apparently.
