Famous bearers, both actresses, are the French Brigitte Bardot (n. 1934) and the German Brigitte Helm (1906-1996) (the latter famous for the 1926 hit Metropolis).
German actress Brigitte Helm, French actress Brigitte Bardot, American actress Bridget Fonda, Irish painter Bridget Riley, French singer Brigitte Fontaine and German crazy lady Bridget Neilson.
As this is the pseudonym of the misanthropic, fascist-leaning French actress Brigitte Bardot, I simply cannot like this name anymore, even though it sounds quite classy and pretty without being too girly. Maybe it could be reclaimed, though.
My name is Brigitte and I'm Dutch, I always pronounce my name as Bri-git with the short i's as the i's in big/brick/sick/etc., so not "long" as Bree-git. Although there are always people who pronounce my name as if it's French, which I really really dislike, actually it's a rare thing if people pronounce it correctly the first time. It isn't that hard, is it?
I think it's a rather lovely variation on Bridget, the latter just makes me think of the saint, and even if it's all well and good to be named after a saint, I think it's a bit of a burden to bestow on a little girl. My middle name was about to be Brigitte.
