The pronunciation of this name as "Sierra" has been heavily influenced by the character Ciara on the American television soap opera "Days of Our Lives". The character was born on the show in December of 2006. The NBC network actually held a vote among fans of the show to vote for the baby's name -- the choices were Cassidy, Darcy, Rori, Bridget, and Ciara. Ciara won, and the writers of the show at that time obviously did not know how it was pronounced back in Ireland, as the claim was that it was one of the choices because of its Irish origin and the Irish-American ancestry of the character, but on the show it is pronounced like "Sierra".https://soaps.sheknows.com/days-of-our-lives/news/368/introducing-ciara-alice-brady/Though the baby was born on the show December 29, 2006, like many soap opera characters she has been "rapidly aged" and her birthdate is now given as July 16, 1997. In 2020 Ciara was kidnapped on the show by a character named Vincent, who had a British accent, and at one point Vincent commented on how the pronunciation of Ciara's name was dumb and "Midwestern", so the writers now realize that the show's pronuciation is not the true Irish one.
This is my middle name, Ciara. (It’s pronounced see-air-uh) Personally, I like this better than the other way people pronounce it, or Sierra. I like my middle name.
I love this pronounced See-Ahr-Uh.
Pronouncing Ciara as see-air-ah is the equivalent of pronouncing a name like Gabriella as Jah-bree-el-ah. Simply unintelligent, and shows an utter lack of respect for the culture and history behind the name.
