A unisex name shortening of the word Coryphée which is an anglicised version of the Latin Coryphaeus, or Koryphaios (Greek κορυφαῖος koryphaîos, from κορυφή koryphḗ́, the top of the head, and often corypheus in English) was the leader of the chorus. Hence the term (sometimes in an Anglicized form "coryphe") is used for the chief or leader of any company or movement. The coryphaeus spoke for all the rest, whenever the chorus took part in the action, in quality of a person of the drama, during the course of the acts. The term has passed into a general name for the chief or principal of any company, corporation, sect, opinion, etc. Thus, Eustathius of Antioch is called the coryphaeus of the First Council of Nicaea; and Cicero calls Zeno the coryphaeus of the Stoics.Paul the Apostle is often entitled Coryphaeus in Christian iconography. In 1856 in the University of Oxford there was founded the office of Coryphaeus or Praecentor, whose duty it was to lead the musical performances directed by the Choragus. The office ceased to exist in 1899. Also a ballet dancer who dances in a small group instead of in the Corps de ballet or as a soloist.
Behind the name writers should add some kind of etymology to the Corey article.
Borrowed from the Irish, Corey is a name of more than one derivation. It is the transferred use of the surname derived from the Gaelic coire (a cauldron, a seething pool, a hollow): hence, “dweller in or near a hollow.” Alternatively, it is an Anglicized form of the various surnames derived from corra (a spear). Chinese words for Corey are (ke-rui), in English meaning - (gods peace).
Could it have something to do with Irish word corradh meaning "spear"?
I read somewhere that the Old Norse name Kori may have meant "curly-haired".It doesn't seem strange that people think this name has an Irish "feel" to it, because the Norse did conquer part of Ireland in the Middle Ages and some Scandinavian names are still used in Ireland.
Corey could also be a nickname for any name beginning with Cor-, not just Cornelius.
Corey can also be a nickname for Cornelius.
Anglo-Saxon origin, meaning "the chosen".
