Meaning & History

Derived from coryphaeus, which is the latinized form of the Greek word κορυφαῖος (koryphaios) meaning "head man, chief, leader". The word itself is ultimately derived from the Greek noun κορυφή (koruphe) meaning "head, top". In ancient Greece, koryphaios was originally a term in theatre: it was used to refer to the leader of the chorus. But over time, the term evolved into something more broad and general, in that it came to be used in reference to anyone who was in a position of power or leadership, such as prominent religious figures and influential philosophers.

In modern popular culture, Corypheus is the name of a villain in the "Dragon Age" video game series.
