In its earliest recorded form Cynric, this name represents an Anglicization of British Cunorix (Cuno- hound + Rix king), recorded earlier in Wroxeter. Both Cynric's predecessor and successor as leaders of the Gewisse also bear British names, a century later Cenwalh's name alludes to his Welsh origins, and even 50 years later Cadwalla, king of the West Saxons and putative descendent of Cynric, bears another British name.
