Meaning & History

Means "great wife of the prince", deriving from the Sumerian elements dam, meaning "spouse, husband or wife", 饞儾 gal, meaning "great, mighty", and nun, meaning "prince, noble, master". The prince was understood to be her husband Ea.
Her character is poorly understood, although she is known to have been associated with ritual purification. She was occasionally equated with the goddess Ninhursag, although generally they were distinguished from each other. She was later incorporated into the Hurrian pantheon, and was worshipped in the city of Hattusa. In later Akkadian sources she was known as Damkina.
