I'm a female Darby, and have discovered that there are some pretty bizare meanings of the name. Darbies are manacles. A Darby is both a large trowel for leveling concrete and a tool for leveling ceilings. However, my mother named me after the Abraham Darby Rose. I think I prefer that namesake. Being named after manacles would be rather weird.
I love the sound of the name Darby. Boy or girl I am not sure about though. I kind of lean towards girl.

Darby Carmichael, main character in the book Darby by Jonathon Scott Fuqua. Very good book, I recommend it.
I find the name ugly, and it sounds utterly masculine to me. The name would be horrible on females, even the somewhat masculine ones. Darcy sounds feminine to me, though, but this name reminds me of the masculine name Darwin, which is actually a pretty good name. Somehow this one just makes me think of very annoying and snobby Brits.
I'm a Darby, female, born in 1943, USA. I love the name! Years ago I did a bit of research on it's origins and discovered that one of the meanings, in old Celtic, is freeborn, or more elaborately, born free of envy. I do believe I also saw that it is related to Jeremiah, but I do not remember the source. The English meaning is deer park. I am lucky to have married a man of Italian heritage who's name means vegetable farmer!
