Darrell was my Dad's middle name & was the surname of his maternal grandma. She immigrated from Sweden in the 1800s. We always assumed it was of French origin as many French migrated to Sweden under the French men (from c. 1000 A.D.) who were "hired" by the Swedes to be kings of Sweden. We have no knowledge of how great-grandma Darrell's family came to be in Sweden however. They were however, brunette Swedes. We pronounce this surname dah-rell' with accent on 2nd syllable. Dad didn't like that his middle name was no more "usable" than his first name. So he insisted that his kids have plain middle names as a backup in case they didn't like their first name. --janieanne.
