It's sometimes used by Jewish ladies as the everyday equivalent of the Hebrew Dvora (Deborah).
Couldn't it also be short for Pandora?
Back in the nineteen-fifties, my mother knew a Jewish woman whose given name was Deborah, but she was always known as Dora.
This comes from the Greek word for "gift".
Dora means "generation" in Hebrew.
