Please, no one name your child this unless you intend on home schooling them. It will be associated with dork which means both geek and a whale's you know...

Dorcas Gailen is Julie Newmar's character in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers".
I agree with the last comment; it's too pretty to scorn or toss over your shoulder, but many people do. This is a somewhat unusual name, so if you are looking for a rarely-used name, try Dorcas.
Dorcas Meadowes in Harry Potter. We don't see her, but Mad-Eye Moody said to Harry that Voldemort probably killed her himself. (Which leaves suspicions. Normally, Voldemort lets his servants kill the ennemies. dum dum dummmm)
I think this name is terrible and thankfully I've never met anyone with the name. It sounds like dork, and you would be teased A LOT. So don't name your kid this.
I think this is a pretty bad name. It sounds too much like "dork-ass" and why would you want people calling your kid that? People try to give their children weird, 'unique' names and don't even think about the consequences.
An okay name, but I'd prefer Dorkella or Dorkette.

Literary: I can't for the life of me remember the name of the book, but the main character's big brother was always calling her Dorcas and she hated it until she found out that he called her that because of her beautiful brown eyes. If someone was to name their daughter Dorcas, they could always call her Dorry/Dori. Mean kids will find a way to pick on someone regardless of their name.
This name is FUNKY. Don't let the bullies get their own way. It shouldn't hinder what you think of this name. I think it's really cool and it should make a come-back.
Whenever I tell someone I like this name. I get the strangest look. LOL But I do like it and I believe anyone who has this name has been teased to death.
I don't think what it sounds like should stand in the way. This is a beautiful name, and if it didn't remind me of dork, then the next thing it reminds me of is of sugar. And I don't think the nickname dorkette is good either, actually I think it's worse, like a very feminine dork.
Actually, I don't find the sound of the name pleasant at all. If you think this name sounds nice, you might consider Doris and Dora, which are prettier, and don't have the 'dork' association.
I think that the name "Dorcas" is very nice and unique! The only reason why some people relate it to "dork" is because they don't know how to pronounce it and mispronounce. It's pronounced as "DoR-cas"(notice the emphasis on the "r"), not "dorc/k-cas". If you pronounced it properly, there won't be any relation to the word "dork". The name is nice and unique! Don't ruin it just because of misproununciation! I like the name Dorcas a lot.
Dorcas is my name. For all of the negative comments, I have never been teased, nor was I homeschooled. If you as a person would tease someone because of their name, that is a problem with you and not with me or my name. The name Dorcas is associated with doing charitable works. Also at least it is a name unlike many so called names that people have today.
I personally see nothing wrong with the name Dorcas. Dorcas is the same name as Tabitha.
The Greek form of Tabitha is as follows: ταβιθα
This is the same name as Dorcas. The Greek form of Dorcas is as follows: δορκας
Both names mean gazelle, which is sometimes called a roe deer. This is a small red deer which lives in the Holy Land. There is a gazelle known as the Dorcas gazelle which was named after the Disciple Dorcas or Tabitha, who is mentioned in Acts 9.
I used to read a book series by Nancy N. Rue called The Salem Years, really awesome series. There was a baby in it named Dorcas.
And to the anonymous commenter: home schoolers are not home prisoners, that's a very common misconception. :)

I like this name. I didn't at first, but it has grown on me. If there was a bullying problem, slightly possible nicknames could be Dora, Cas, or Cassie.
The name of a shepherdess in Shakespeare's play The Winter's Tale. I have to play her in a performance I am in, though I am not a huge fan of the name. It has a nice meaning, however, I'll give you that.
